Pat My great grandfather came to USA from Switzerland in 1873 & was listed in the book "Germans to America, Lists of Passengers Arriving at U.S. Ports, Volume 30, June 1873-November 1873, edited by Ira A Glazier and P. William Filby. This "series" of books (you'll probably need a different volume) is available at large libraries. Your local library can probably find nearest to you. I believe all? immigration records (images) are available from Ancestry.com - of course, you have to purchase that particular subscription. Finding his actual citizenship "paperwork" is another story & may be more difficult.
