In March of 1803, my ancestor, Daniel Hofmann, left the village of Sissach, about 10 miles southeast of Basel, traveled to Amsterdam, and sailed to the port of Philadelphia. He and his family sailed on the ship Commerce and arrived in Philadelphia in October of 1803. Would it have been possible for them to travel on the Rhine all the way to Amsterdam or would they have had to make part of the journey there by land? Thanks for any information. Linda Dennis
