He came over about 1886 and she arrived in 1888 to marry him. Neither became citizens at that time. The family returned to Switzerland sometime between 1892 and 1900 - I haven't found out why yet. Have you checked her return to the US with the children in the Ellis Island data base? I do know for sure that the US did not keep the ship lists of those (citizens or not) who departed from the US ports.
