    3. I use GeneWeb, a genealogy freeware developped by a French researcher at the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control (INRIA). The interface is done by any Web navigator: Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc. The pages are not precomputed. Each request, even the simple access to someone's personal record will create the page dynamically. The program is specialized in relationship and consanguinity computing. It can display pages in Chinese, Czech, German, Danish, English, Esperanto, Spanish, Finnish, French, Hebrew, Icelandic, Italian, Dutch, Norwegian, Portuguese, Swedish. Information update (adding, modification, deletion of persons and families) can be done under the navigator, like the rest. It is possible to customize the welcome page and the other displayed pages, changing the background color or pattern, the fonts colors, and the default used language. A program is provided to build a GeneWeb base from a GEDCOM file. Some options allows to adjust parameters. Conversely, it is possible to create a GEDCOM file from a GeneWeb database. In short, it is a very powerful software and it's free! You can see see GeneWeb working at http://www.genealogie.to/cgi-local/geneweb.cgi?b=pasteur;lang=en . For more information on the sofware itself, go to http://cristal.inria.fr/~ddr/GeneWeb/. Each package will have their own pros and cons. Most software vendors will let you try it out for 30-60 days with a money-back guarantee. But sometimes we get so busy, we really don't check it out throroughly enough. Suggestion: Try the free ones, like Personal Ancestral File 4.0.3 which can be downloaded from the LDS Church FamilySearch website store. Start at: http://www.familysearch.org/ click on "Order Family History Resources" (left side) click on "Software Downloads - Free" (3rd up from bottom) click on item 36100999 - Personal Ancestral File 4.0.3 English/Spanish best wishes, Dave Schmutz -----Original Message----- From: Samy Khalid-Sengstag [mailto:sk_sengstag@hotmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, December 07, 1999 3:23 PM To: SWITZERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SWITZ] Family Tree Software Hi Robert, I have been using Generations Grande Suite (from Sierra) for a year now, and I still love it. This is definitely a good software I would recommend. What was really important for me when I bought it was to be able to input all the accents and special characters I needed. Another priority was that the system had to accept "special" situations, ie several weddings, adopted children, unknown or unproven parentage, etc. Go visit Sierra's website for yourself. You'll get a better idea of what they offer. It must be very user-friendly, able to insert family pictures, able to add comments about each person, doesn't cost an arm and a leg, able to insert files from other sources, etc. Any comments or recommendations would be appreciated. thanks, robert rothenbuhler new braunfels, texas piepint@nbtx.com ==== SWITZERLAND Mailing List ==== Support RootsWeb!
