    3. I had sent a reply directly to Pat, but it is probably worth remarking to the list in general. The Salis family was quite prominent in the history of Graubünden and established branches in various parts of the Canton. They were active in civic, economic, and military affairs. Von Salis members often served as officers of Swiss regiments in foreign military service. The different branches of the family often appended their home locations to the surname to indicate the branches. The branch cited in Peggy Chapman's message is often seen in documents as von Salis-Soglio. The branch from the Marschlins estate (near the junction of the Landquart and the Rhein, just south of Malans) was von Salis-Marschlins, and so forth. There are von Salis family histories and genealogies in the LDS Family History Library collection (I haven't checked to see how many are on microfilm). The family and it's relations to the other prominent families in the Canton is also discussed in the book by Randolph C. Head, 1995, "Early Modern Democracy in the Grisons: Social Order and Political Language in a Swiss Mountain Canton, 1470-1620," Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, xviii+287 pp., ISBN 0-521-47086-2. The book is in print and is available through Amazon.com and other sources. It's an interesting read if you want to learn more about the development of Graubünden. One wouldn't get it as a genealogical source, though.
