    3. The battle of Marignano took place 13/14th September 1515 between a French army with Venecian support and the Swiss army, which was made up of contingents from many parts of Switzerland. Previous to the battle there was an agreement and some of the Swiss soldiers returned to Switzerland, including those from Berne, Biel, Freiburg and Solothurn. Those from Basel, Zurich, Lucern and other Kantons took part in the battle. Most of the 12,000 casulties were Swiss. It was a defeat that ended Swiss expansion. The battle of Kappel was part of a Swiss religous war and took part on 11th October 1531. A catholic army of 8000 defeated the Zurich protestant army of 2300. Amongst the casulties was Ulrich Zwingli, one of the main religous reformers of this time. , so he was almost certainly part of the losing Zurich army. These are obviously simple explanations of the battles, but as Zurich soldiers took part in both battles and that that Rudolph Schinz came from Canton Zurich, there is a good chance that he fought with his home Canton in both battles. The Swiss were often employed as mercenaries, and sometimes took part on both sides in the same battle. One Canton on one side, and another on the other. There were also Swiss mercenaries in British service in North America. In 1816 there were 25,000 Swiss in foreign service. Jon
