    3. Hi again Thanks to Maralyn I realize I've mixed up my french and english, "Depts 57, 67 68" is a french reference to departements (kind of canton) Moselle, Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin. "Concordance" is french for match, I'm tired this evening ! What I wanted to say is that there was a possibility to find some matching villages for Steiner through Geneanet if only a general indication was given. I mean if you search for the name you won't find them obligatory attached to the town but maybe a nearby village that may help locating the surname... Have a look at Geneanet www.geneanet.org and you'll see that the Steiner name is recorded by genealogists in Switzerland, France and Germany. If you knew where in France your ancestor was stationned you could look for a concordance for Steiner are present mostly in dept 57, 67 and 68 in France. My ancestor Joseph GUBLER of Müllheim (Kanton Thurgau) was born in 1734. He served in the French military and came back to Müllheim with a wife - Katharina STEINER. He died in 1796. Katharina was not from Müllheim (there are no Steiners in the area); their first child was born in Stadel, Zürich, Switzerland in 1765. The godparents were from Stadel. Their other child (my ancestor) was born in 1767. >From the death records of Katharina (died 1799) she was born about 1730. THere is no indication of where she was from. The records of Stadel contain no Steiners either. Is there anyone that can help me crack this difficult case? No marriage is listed for this couple. The most likely scenario I can devise is that he was on his way home from the service in France, met Katharina, got married, and had his daughter on the way home. Stadel is due west of Müllheim, so there really wasn't another reason to be there. They weren't in the 1763 census of Stadel either. Are there military records, etc? Thank you for helping me in this situation. Sincerely, Daniel ==== SWITZERLAND Mailing List ==== Swiss Resource Site http://swiss.genealogy.net
