Interestingly I, just today, finished reading the detailed diary of Mathias Dürst of Canton Glarus. He along with 193 men, women and children emigrated from Canton Glarus in April 1845. They left from the west end of the Walensee thru the Linktkanal to the Obersee which took them to Zurich. Then by river north to the Rhein River. Only at the town of Laufenburg did they need to portage around a small falls. They then took the Rhein to Rotterdam and Amsterdam, Holland and finally to Nieuwediep, Holland where they boarded the ocean sailing ship. They landed in the US at Baltimore. There final destination was Wisconsin and at a place now called New Glarus. They arrived in August 1845. About 90 miles from my home in Dubuque, Iowa. Canton St. Gallen is immediately east of Canton Glarus. People in St. Gallen certainly had access to the Walensee also. My GGrandfather was from Mels, Canton St. Gallen. Hope this might shed some light on at least one route out. The diary was in a book called New Glarus 1845- 1970. Doug Hilby
