From what I understand it is a Swedish name- that some Swedes came down to Switzerland to help fight in some war - and stayed. There was one Longenecker ( spelling different of course) that came over in about the 1600's direct from Sweden and bought some land in NYC- Wall St area then left to go somewhere else - his nephew-son had taken the route of going to Switzerland first to fight and then came over to Pa. Settled around NJ I THINK will have to check. If interested in more info I can get it to you. There is an entire geneological book on the Longeneckers - but checking the SwissGen site MIGHT be helpful too since they intermarried with a lot of Swiss. Shirley
