Hi, I am just wondering if anyone has info on how to find an exact address of where a family would have lived back in 1884 in Wynau? My Herzig family (Frederick Herzig) left Wynau in 1884. We have a picture of the house, but we don't know where it is actually located. Is there a certain type of record that I should be looking for? We know they lived with the Hofer family in the same house. The house is probably gone, but we'd still like to know where it was. Any info anyone is willing to share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time, Laryl Hludzenski Lhludzen@twcny.rr.com

Go to the map: http://map.search.ch/affeltrangen.en.html Zoom out one degree. The town is probably Zezikon which is about 1 km. north of Affeltrangen. Hello "Wattersweier" seems to me a misspelling. I search in the "Verzeichniss der Ortschaften und Gemeinden des Kantons Thurgau", printed about 1832, and in this booklet there are wether a hamlet nor a village named "Wattersweier". Next names were: Watt (today in Roggwil), Weyer (Roggwil), Weyerhäusli (Matzingen), Weyerhäusli (Wigoltingen), Weyerhäusli (Amlikon-Bissegg), Weyerhof (Zuben), Weyerholz (Mammern), Weyern (Wittenwil), Weyern (Wängi) and Weyerstein (Berg). But there are a lot of "-schweilen, -weil, -weiler > today mostly -schwilen, -wil, -wiler) like Wagersweil, Wallenweil, Wartenweil or Wittenweil. Hello, I recently received information that a relative of my ancestor was born 1817 in "Wattersweier" Thurgau Switzerland. I cannot find a town with this name in Thurgau, all of Switzerland, or anywhere else. Either Wattersweier is a really bad misspelling or perhaps it was an area incorporated into a larger town?? Georg Theodor SCHNEIDER, b. 26 Apr. 1817 in "Wattersweier" in Thurgau (Switzerland). Any suggestions for tracking this person? While not new to genealogy, I am new to Swiss genealogy. Lola. Märwil is a neighboring town of Affeltrangen. (see the maps I sent you). Since your book is an "Inventory of towns and villages in Kanton Thurgau (TG) " and it speaks of the [72] Kirchgemeinden (church communities, aka parishes) , the word "Filiale" in this book may mean that Märwil at that time did not have a parish priest of its own, but shared a priest with the main church in Affeltrangen. A traveling preacher. As you can see, Tobel is also one of those villages mentioned. Hanneli BTW My St. Galler friend Walter in Vancouver BC just sent me this absolutely marvelous interactive Swiss Search Map website you might also profit from. It has many interesting features. http://www.search.ch/ http://map.search.ch/?x=1164&y=-1478&z=16 Click on "Schweizer Karte" on the right (Switzerland Map), then left click on the area. Left mouse increases, right mouse decreases. As you scroll the map in any direction and patiently wait a little, it keeps adding the surrounding places. It can even lead you to the very house you were born in. You can send the very map to someone [verschicken]. [Druckversion] means "printable version". Awesome. Thanks Walter ! Another useful feature is "Telephonbuch". ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lola Weber" <hunter1@scattercreek.com> To: <SWITZERLAND-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 08, 2005 3:40 PM Subject: What is the meaning of this Evangelical church ?? > Does this mean it is located in Märwil? > > > > Thanks for your help. > > > > Lola M Weber > > hunter1@scattercreek.com > > > > !INFOR: Verzeichnis der Ortschaften des Kantons Thurgau, 1943, FHL SLC > 949.459 E5v > > Gazateers p. 15 - Evangelische Kirchgemeinder (72) > > Affeltrangen mit der Fillale Märwil. > > ______________________________
Hi Yes, Jim Rickenbacker's informations are ok. "Lücken" by the baptisms (1636), Marriages (1636) and Deaths (1636-1677) means gaps. The originals of the Population Tables are in the State Archiv of Zurich, because to approx. 1798/1803 for Evangelist church affairs in the Thurgau were Zurich responsible. The map on http://www.geneal-forum.com/forum_d/showthread.php?id=552 shows a border between Nidau and Biel. According to http://www.nidau.ch/de/03_portrait/geschichte.shtml?navid=34 Nidau became part of Bern in 1388. According to http://www.dhs.ch/externe/protect/textes/d/D222-1-379.html Biel belonged to the Bishopric Basel (Eveche de Bale) - which was a "zugewandter Ort" - see http://swiss.genealogy.net/kant/bafb-d.htm for a detailed history of the Bishopric (unfortunately available in German only). So, can someone tell me a place > to find a map of Canton Bern in 1798? > Alan Rossing, Monterey, California, USA The villages will not have moved a lot since then ;-). On http://www.geneal-forum.com/forum_d/showthread.php?id=552 you'll find a link to a collection of historic maps. There is no large scale map of Bern around 1800 - but a Swiss map of 1794. The example included on the above web page shows Nidau in the bottom right corner. Sombeval is too small to be indicated on this map - but nearby Soncebas (Sonceboz) is. In case you want to download entire maps (which is possible) your internet connection should not be too slow: most maps are between 5 and 10 MB ! It is quite fast, however, to get just a "thumbnail" where you can click on the region of interest, and see a small part of the map immediately; it is also quite fast to shift the detail map left/right or up/down. Very nice maps and a very nice page indeed! Best regards - Wolf
Hello again, I forgot about Wolf W. Seelentag's Swiss GEN site and found the _Historical map of Switzerland (1536-1798)_ (http://www.eye.ch/swissgen/ch1798.gif) . So another question. On the map is shows Biel as a blue dot and it is "Zugewandte Ort". Is Biel an independent city in 1798? Is Nidau part of Biel in 1798? Andreas Dättwyler remarried in 1799 and had 4 more children born in Nidau. Last question. Why was Andreas in 1798? Thank you again, Alan Rossing, Monterey, California, USA
Hello again, thank you all that answer my questions. I really was trying to find Sombeval and Nidau in the year 1798, not currently in 2005. So, can someone tell me a place to find a map of Canton Bern in 1798? Alan Rossing, Monterey, California, USA
