As I'm sure you know, Switzerland is a multilingual country. It is my understanding that "Bern" is the German spelling and "Berne" is French. Since "Switzerland" is the name we English speakers give to the country, I think either "Canton Bern, Switzerland" or "Berne Canton, Switzerland" is equally correct to designate the location in English. - Judy I come across addresses like: Bern....... and Berne......which is correct? Canton Bern, Switzerland...................? Berne Canton, Switzerland..................?

The name is John Abersold aka as Johnannes Aebersold in Switzerland. On the ships manifest it was spelled John Ebersold. I know this is the correct person because his wife and children were listed with him and they were correct. He was born 27 of December 1795. and died January 26 1866. The manifest list him as 30 when he came over. aber@kiski.net ----- Original Message ----- From: BREATAX@aol.com To: aber@highvision.net ; SWITZERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, November 25, 2005 4:33 PM Subject: Re: [SWITZ] Port of new york On this type of query if you included the name and approx. age I could look them up in one of my CD's and help you. In March of 1803, my ancestor, Daniel Hofmann, left the village of Sissach, about 10 miles southeast of Basel, traveled to Amsterdam, and sailed to the port of Philadelphia. He and his family sailed on the ship Commerce and arrived in Philadelphia in October of 1803. Would it have been possible for them to travel on the Rhine all the way to Amsterdam or would they have had to make part of the journey there by land? Thanks for any information. Linda Dennis
Hi List, Not sure what you want to hear from "Canadian Cousins" but I surely am in need of a helping hand re: my gr-gr-grandparents. Here is what I know - not very much. JOHN "Swiss" MEYER B ABT 1814, and Elizabeth BUSLINGER/BUSSLINGER/URSLINGER born 8 September 1814 'Rhaetia Helvetia' arrived Wellesley Township, WATERLOO COUNTY ONTARIO CANADA about 1849 with two children Joseph Peter b.16 Oct 1844 and Veronica b about 1847. ""Veronica was two when they arrived after 6 weeks on a sailboat" my Aunt told me many years ago. I wish there were Meyer/Busslinger "cousins" out there is this world! The correct pronunciation of Le Havre would sound like LAHVR in English - with just the slightest suggestion of a rolled "r" at the end. (Think of Spanish) In any case it is NOT Le HARVE ,as it is often misspelled and mispronounced. Hope this helps! Lorraine
About the articles, Nellie, you found in the newspaper when your immigrant ancestor arrived - did it include a list of the passengers? Hi List, I saw something on History Televison about crossing before the Canal was actually built, then it showed constructing the canal. It looked like an awful chore to travel there. Someone please remove me from this list. I have tried but keep getting these emails which does not help me at all. Thank you "Jim Rickenbacker(3)" <j3mrick@borisbrooks.com> wrote: The book, "America Experienced, Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century Accounts of Swiss Immigrants to the United States", has a large number of first person accounts of immigrants written between 1704 and 1906. This is a great book if you are interested in the immigrants. It has been out of print for a while but is now available again from Picton Press. My particular interest is early eighteenth century immigration to South Carolina. The most common route at that time was Rotterdam to Cowes, England (Isle of Wright) to Charleston, SC to Philadelphia, PA, then back to Europe. This was the traditional sailing route taking advantage of prevailing winds and currents. My ancestors voyage, which was described as: "During the whole voyage we had steadily good wind and weather ...", took 9 weeks from Rotterdam to Charleston in early summer, 1735. Immigration to Carolina was being heavily promoted in Switzerland in the early eighteenth century and some Swiss officials dubbed the madness "Rabies Carolina". Some of the promotional pamphlets being circulated in Switzerland at the time are on our society's website: http://www.ogsgs.org/recruit.htm. I have some ideas and spoken to various people who told me it was either a depression or a crop failure or maybe it was both? Are you researching the JENNY or BLUMER families from Schwanden? Hi Jerry, Mine all came from Glarus: came mainly from Betschwanden, Luchsingen, Braunswald. Some way back in 1700's came from Rueti and Sool. Names are : Fuerer, Hefti, Klaesi, Knobel, Kundert, Luchsinger, Specht. The line came to New Glarus in late 1840's early 1850's and settled right there. First ones left via down the Rhine to Holland, later ithers left via Le Havre. Pretty easy for me to search compared to some of my other relatives. :) Regards from Texas, USA Nellie, a 68-yr-old root digger

Regarding Panama: One of my husband's relatives went to California to seek gold. He returned via ship - first from San Francisco to Panama, where he walked across the isthmus, then via a second ship to the US. Maybe Linda's relatives did something similar. Judy St. Louis Hi Linda, you state that a person landed in America in 1866 and proceeded thru the Panama Canal to San Francisco. The only thing wrong with this is that the Panama Canal construction started in 1881 and was not completed until 1914.
