    3. The hard stuff. Stills were plentiful in Penn's Trust were they also as commonly found among German=speakers in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries? Of course breweries and wineries were well known, but how about the hard stuff? I know some members of my German-speaking family's paid too much attention to their apple orchards and their beloved stills. Seems to help explain the failures of one or two family members. MY QUESTION IS Was the still and the abundance of readily available fruit and grain something new to these early colonials. Later of course Hamilton found it an easy way to raise money - tax the distillers. It was the first of a tax pattern which has become inbred in our society.

    3. Ken, go to the website www.pictonpress.com and they offer THE MEN OF BERN. They also have a list of surnames that you can view to learn if your interests are included. and yes, it's translated to English. I think it's available now in cd format. Genealogy libraries also often have the books there. It's a set of 3 large volumes. I don't imagine it is available for inter-library loans, but maybe someone knows a place that it is. Good luck. 3. I have the information regarding their return. On the manifest it states she was here from 1888 to 1890. Which isn't quite correct. According to family she arrived in 1888 to marry Andrew and left shortly after her second child was born, which was in 1893 - which I know is correct. That is why I'm looking for information ranging from 1890 to 1900. -----Original Message----- From: Susan Biedron [mailto:Susan@jsbiedron.com] Sent: Thursday, February 09, 2006 10:04 AM To: SWITZERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [SWITZ] Return to Switzerland Have you checked her return to the US with the children in the Ellis Island data base? Hottenbärg is not listed in Familiennamenbuch - you'd have to go for Hottenberg (citizens of Arch, canton Bern, only). Best regards - Wolf

    1. Men of Bern - DäTTWYLER
    2. Hello Listers, another question. I GGGrandfather Andreas DäTTWYLER was born in 1759 in Biel, Canton Bern. He married Elizabeth WILHELM in 1782 and had 3 children born 1784, 1787 and 1789. She died, I think, in 1798 in Biel, Canton Bern. I have not found him in the book "Men of Bern". Only DäTHWYLER/ DäTWEILER/ DäTWEILLER/ DäTWEYLER/ etc. Can a person be not counted?
