Hello Everyone: I just joined the mailing list and was wondering if anyone is researching families in Liesberg (Canton Basel-Landschaft) and Balstahl (Canton Solothurn). Also, I believe I have the correct Cantons listed, but if I am wrong, I would appreciate knowing the correct Cantons for these two towns, Thank you Paul C. Miller
Fellow Swiss researchers: I was perusing the used book section of Picton Press and came across a deal for "Swiss Surnames" - but you can only get voumes 2 & 3 at the special price of $70 (the whole set normally sells for $149.50, so basically $50 / book) Check it out at: http://www.pictonpress.com/catalog/Abe_Usd_1.html BOOK_NO: 319USD AUTHOR: Lewis Bunker Rohrbach TITLE: Swiss Surnames: A Complete Register, commonly known as Familiennamenbuch der Schweiz, American edition with new Preface http://www.pictonpress.com/catalog/books/1630.htm SUBJECT: SWITZERLAND PUBL_DATE PRICE: $70.00 DESCRIPT: 2 volumes only; vol. 2 has bent cover, vol. 3 bound upside down I suppose you would have to ask if you could get volume 1 also. regards, Dave Schmutz Here are the Picton Press links to their Swiss pages: http://www.pictonpress.com/catalog/genealogies.htm#swiss http://www.pictonpress.com/catalog/foreign.htm#switzerland
The request for information about wills in Canton Basel by Norma Tucker, received this reply by the Canton Basel Archives in Basel. >From Daniel Kress, Archivist "Our services are keeping a large stock of different archives from local notary's offices (See shelf marked "Notariatsarchiv". If you are looking for the will of particular persons, the researcher you hire will have to have the name of the notary public who read the will of this person." Sadly, the LDS has not copied these wills. Could anyone tell me if there are certain notaries for certain parishes? If we know the church parish where the man lived, could we more easily locate the man? Anne

Dear Friends, the server hosting swiss.genealogy.net has recently been upgraded, also resulting in a changed IP address - which seems to cause problems with some name servers. Should you experience problems in accessing the above mentioned URL, please, try alternatively one of the following mirror sites : http://www.eye.ch/swissgen/ http://www2.genealogy.net/gene/reg/CH/ http://german.genealogy.net/gene/reg/CH/ They all worked (for me) just now. Hello All, Thank you all very much for the information you've sent me. You've brought to my attention numerous avenues of research and I appreciate everything!! I have another question - this one about naming patterns.Henry Boozer married Catherine Painter, daughter of John Adam Painter and wife Catherine. I have a list of Henry and Catherine's children that I believe is correct. They were: Adam Boozer (named for Catherine's father) Henry R. Boozer Mary D. Boozer Catherine Boozer (named for Catherine and her mother) Peter Boozer Margaret Boozer Elizabeth Boozer John Russell Boozer (my ancestor) Eli Boozer William Boozer Would it be reasonable to expect that Henry R. and Mary D. might be named for Henry's parents? Is the name Rolandus a Swiss name? My father's name was James Rolandus Boozer and his grandfather (son of John Russell above) had Rolandus in his name. Any information or thoughts on this? Thank you all again for your generosity. Doris Boozer Tartt
Hi list I would just like to thank everyone that helped me with my ZWINGLI reserch. I receved enouph information to continue my serch Dave
Thank you Maralyn for your tireless efforts on this list. There are frequent contributors like Wolf, Dave, Pete and Jean among others that I also wish to thank. I have been slowly building up the courage to move into foreign areas of my research. I have at least three family lines into Switzerland. I now have my German/English English/German dictionary and it has been fun figuring things out. I also have at least one line into Germany (and probably more) so it looks like my high school German is finally paying off. Wolf, I notice that you are in the same canton that my grandmother emmigrated from. Her name was Hedwig Esther Stricker, b. 10 Feb, 1888. She emmigrated at the age of four with her family. I now have her parent's names, Peter Stricker and Hedwig Wachter. They were from Sargans, St. Gallen. The story is that Peter Stricker was a piano tuner and Hedwig Wachter's family were more well to do. Hedwig's family was not happy when she left for the USA to be with him. Another family resided in Switzerland for about a generation. Hans Jacob Hagi was born 21 Nov, 1668, in Elsenz, Baden, Germany. His sons, Hans George Hage and Johan Jacob Hage were born in Switzerland ca 1695, 1698. All three emmigrated to America in 1732. Other variations of the name are Haga, Hagey, Hege. Another family line is Reidi, Reedy, Riedy. Hanzet Reidi ca. 1635-1700 was buried in the Filisur Parish Church, Filisur, Graubunden as was his spouse Ursina Pol Caspar d. 20 Aug, 1693. Dave and Larry Reedy have done a great job of showing the family line at Reedy.org. I wouldn't be surprised if more Swiss lines continue to pop up! I have a lot to do here, and thank you all for being here. Amy
This work was also announced in "The Swiss Connection" Volume 1, Number 2 (January 1993,) when information was being solicited by the Historical Society of Liechtenstein. It is a revised edition of Norbert Jansen's book, "Nach Amerika!" At that time it was indicated that most Liechtensteiners who came to the U.S. in the second half of the 19th century settled in the Midwest, particularly in and around Milwaukee, Chicago, St. Louis, and Cincinnati. A number of the names of prominent Liechtensteiners were listed in this issue. Sincerely, Maralyn A. Nach Amerika ! is a great book on emigration from Liechtenstein to America - in two volumes : Volume 1 describes the reasons for emigration, the journey to America, successes and failures in the new country with many examples; it also connects Liechtenstein and American history. Volume 2 contains biographical notes on 14 single emigrants or families. Finally fairly recent emigrants describe their experiences. The Register lists all surnames of known emigrants to North- and South-America. Whilst the book is written in German, an English abstract is now available online. Furthermore, the authors offer to check whether individuals are mentioned in the book - you are just requested to consult the surname index first : don't ask for any surnames which are not mentioned in the index ! You'll find a link to these pages from the "SwissGen News" page http://swiss.genealogy.net/news-m.htm where you may also subscribe to the "Mind-It" feature, which will inform you via e-mail as soon as a new page (or a major re-write) is announced on the news page. Hello Listers, I hope someone can give me some direction. My ancestor, Henry Boozer (probably Heinrich Buser) was born in 1801 in Switzerland. His father died in 1808 and his mother remarried. Shortly thereafter, the family came to America - I think between 1810-1820. As far as I know now there were four of them - Henry and his sister and his mother and step-father. I don't know any of their names. Henry was bound out to a man named Becker in Lancaster Co., PA for four years. He was married in 1825 in PA or OH to Catherine Painter, daughter of John Adam Painter and wife Catherine. Henry and Catherine lived in Columbiana Co., OH until about 1845 when they moved to Wood Co., OH. The "family tradition" in our family was that Henry and his sister were left orphaned when their parents died enroute to America and that their governess took everything they had, so they were taken in by passengers on the ship, not finding each other again until they were old. Another descendant of Henry told me that in their family it was said that they "sailed from Holland or LeHavre". Can anyone tell me if they would have traveled by other means from Switzerland to either of these places to depart by ship, or would these be ports that the ship would have docked in during the voyage?? Is there a clue here? The passenger lists that I have found in libraries and on the net have very few listings for the years I am looking for. Are they not available or have I been looking in the wrong places? Several people have suggested that I go to a FHC and read the Julius Billeter files but my Mother lives with me and can't be left alone so I am housebound and don't know when I could go to a larger city where there is a FHC. So, any help or direction you good people could give me would be greatly appreciated! Doris Boozer Tartt in Mississippi
