Hi, I will need to write (in German) to the archives of a Catholic church in Graubuenden and need help on how to address this letter. All I have is the address, no name. Thanks, Brigitte
Dear Wolf, Thank you very much for your reply of 11 November! You wrote: >The fact that this information is available in German only is certainly a >drawback for many users : this is not a technical problem - just a manpower >problem; if anyone is willing to translate these texts into English (well - >better be a group of people) we'll put them into the database. I welcome your initiative, and will forward the translations I make of the records I extract from the database in my research as I go along. The predominant question on my part is how far I can deviate from the format of the original text. I usually transcribe the words into readable prose: "$ der Rusterholtz bebaut den Hof auf der Gisenrüti 1404 Wädenswil %" becomes "The first known mention of the name occurred in 1404, when _der Rusterholtz_ -- "the (man) Rusterholz" -- inhabited the farm on the Gisenrüti in the municipality of Wädenswil." Is this all right with you? >I hope you find the Swiss Surname Directory > http://swiss.genealogy.net/surnam-m.htm >useful and wish you all the best with your future research - Wolf Yes, I find it useful! By the way, is the member option located at http://iseli.simplenet.com/ch-names/enter/ disabled? I am no longer able to review or create a profile. Kjell Ove Hattrem
Thank you all that answered the meaning of A" and AE. Now another question? Does my surname DA"TTWYLER can also be spelled DA"TTWEILER? Is there anyone who knows what the Swiss policy was on how often they did a census in the 1800's Emerson
Anybody out there interested in doing some research work for me in the Bern area? Thank You, Terry Millheim
I was checking the marriage record of Jann Heldstab in the Schuders (Graubünden) church book and noticed that the minister had made an entry for the marriage of Jann's father, Peter Heldstab, even though that marraige was well before the beginning of the seperate church book for Schuders (ca 1700). Earlier entries for Schuders were made in the Schiers church book, which has a straightforward entry for the 1668 marriage of Peter Heldstab and Catarina List. [Peter and Catarina are my 8th-great-grandparents, by the way.] Most of the surviving church books for the Prättigau valley begin about 1650 or later, so the statement below provides genealogical data for before most of these books. It may be of some interest to anyone looking at the Heldstab genealogy. The entry reads as follows when translated: "1660 [actually 1668] Peter Heldstab and Catarina List of Fideris were married. They were father and mother children - Hans-Peter, Jori, Jan, Barbla, Elsa, Trina, Anna, Margreth. The Grandfather Schreiber [clerk] Jori Heldstab, [ancestor] of all Hel[dstabs - interpolated, page damaged at that point] in Schuders, Schiers, Bußerein [Pusserein, a district between Schuders and Schiers], Saas and over the Landquart." According to the Familienamenbuch der Schweiz, the Heldstab surname is presently found in Schiers (Schuders is now part of it administratively), Saas, Küblis, and Klosters, all towns along the Landquart river in the Prättigau valley. I would be interested in exchanging data with interested researchers and Heldstab relatives. Regards, Mike Hobart
I am looking for Godfrey, his wife Louisa and son Meinrad Kälin. I believe they lived in Ensiedeln, Switzerland. I believe Godfrey died in 1905. Louisa and her son Meinrad came to America around 1909. Any information on Godfrey and his family would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. Debbie in Indiana USA
I have borrowed the FHC microfilm (#0948669) of Catholic Church records from Rorschach which includes baptismal records from 1828-1903. The records are in German and Latin but are fairly easy to read at least for the early years. If anyone needs a lookup, please let me know and I will try to help. I will be going to the FHC tomorrow morning. Patty in Colorado

The earliest with this surname immigrated on the ship "Mary" to Philadelphia in 1743. They were from the canton of Zurich and from the area called Dalikon. I think that his first name was Rudolph and he came over with his wife and 4 or 5 children. I don't have this material in front of me, but my mother has some of it at her home. Thank you very much, Gwendalynn Gohlke Dunn

Can someone what language most Swiss people speak? German I assume. Could some tell me some of the big cities of Switzerland & soem of the ports of departure back in the late 1890's let's say. I am trying ot familiarize myself to German names so I can start with my Raber lines, doing Swiss reseach. Simple things are the best to understand. My husband's family came over to USA, to the Ohio area, in late 19th century, with two brothers, John, Chris, & 2 kids, 4 & possibly 6 years old. His name was Peter Raber. Brother, john ended up going on to Idaho, Chris is unknown where he ended up. If this is familar to anyone please contact me. Happy hunting, CCRaber
