    3. Greetings Again, In answer to questions asked: 1. The road map can be purchased at any book store such as Barnes and Nobles, Books-a-Million, Walden,... A good place is in a shopping mall. The one I have is a 1995 edition by Rand-McNally, scale 1:303,000 which equates to 1 inch represents 7.5 km or 4.5 miles approx. Excellent for planning a trip. 2. Not all towns/parishes are listed on the map. Those found that were requested are: a. Muotathal- 10 km due East oif Brunnen - Zip 6436 Kt SZ b. Heiden - 10 km due East of St. Gallen - Zip 9410, Kt AR c. Lauperswil - 20 km due East of Bern - Zip 3438, Kt BE 3. Curious- Joann B. - Any relation to a Betschart on Kleegg in Mörschäch? Happy Holiday, Anton Flecklin Louisiana

    3. Thanx Shalori, I went to the Swiss On Line Dictionary and the software is only $39. But..... I need a book, not software. I want to take it with me to the Family History Library, take it in the Living Room when I'm working on my genealogy while watching television, etc. I might just buy it to have it on line, but I think I'm going to get the German-English Genealogy Dictionary several members of the list recommend. 3. Forwarded by somebody who has MAAG from Russikon in tree. --------------------------- http://genforum.genealogy.com/maag/ GenForum finally set up our very own MAAG Family Forum, where we can post our research, stories, queries, anything 'genealogical' and connected to MAAG. This is the place that many will go to for the first time when they look for their MAAG heritage. Lets make sure they will want to come back over and over again. I especially want to invite those living in Europe to post here; we need and want as much input as possible from those of you still living where our ancestors once lived. Tell us about about the villages and land they inhabited - what remains and what has been lost to history. Thanks and WELCOME! Once again, our new forum is located at http://genforum.genealogy.com/maag/ Yours truly, Steve Lapp in San Francisco (just turned fifty years old, and rairin' to go for another 50).

    1. [SWITZ] Genealogy Software Results
    2. Robert Rothenbuhler
    3. Hi, Based on the comments I received from everyone on a family tree software program, the following are the results: 48% used Family Tree Maker 14% Personal Ancestral File 8% Family Origins 6% Legacy 6% Brother's Keeper 5% Generations Family Tree 3% Master Genealogist 3% Generations Grande Sutie 2% Ultimate Family Tree Deluxe 2% Ancestral Quest 1% Genealogy2000, GenWeb, & GenDesigns There were pro's and con's on every program. Most of the comments I received on PAF were that it was good and free. I received some good comments from a researcher/ computer expert with years of experience on Family Origins, but also received a comment from someone that their tech support was very bad. Most of the comments were on FTM. In general, they were good ones. Got several comments on the useless CDs that you get with FTM, but you can purchased FTM without the extra CDs. FTM has good support. Then I received a message from someone telling me to take a look at deja.com that had ratings on genealogy software, which the results were somewhat different from the survey I did. The top 10 are listed as follows: They are in order from best to worst. Family Origins (the best) Legacy Family Tree Brother's Keeper Master Genealogist Reunion Ultimate Family Tree Deluxe Personal Ancestral File Family Treasures Family Tree Maker Deluxe Edition III Ancestors and Descendants Is Family Tree Maker Deluxe Edition III (#9 on the list) from the same maker as FTM?? There were others mentioned. I just listed the top ten. This is getting harder and harder for me to decide on which one to get. Just wanted to share this little survey I did with you. Any comments are welcome. robert piepint@nbtx.com

    1. [SWITZ] MINDER GenForum Page
    2. Gary Minder
    3. A MINDER GenForum page has been established! You can get to it at http://genforum.familytreemaker.com/minder/ My MINDER ancestors came from the Huttwil, BE area in the 1890s. They were established in Huttwil for generations prior to that. I urge anyone with MINDER family connections (Swiss or otherwise) to stop by and post. If you have visited GenForum before you know that many forums are very active and can be a great way to maintain contact with other researchers...and new found cousins. I plan to post a summary of my MINDER roots in the coming days and I hope other MINDER researchers will do the same. I also intend to begin a MINDER mail list. Feel free to e-mail me if you'd like to notified when it is online. Allied family surnames in Switzerland include KOHLER, BUHLER, WIRTH, HAAS, KURT, KASER, JAGGI, and LANZ. 3. Greetings Great stocking stuffer - a ROAD MAP OF SWITZERLAND ($12-$15). Prior to the 1900's, familes tended to stay in one area. Because of landscape (mountains, lakes), travel was very limited. If you know where your ancestors came from, chances are that they married someone from the same region. So give someone a strong hint or just wrap one up for yourself and mark it from St Nick. For Peggy in Ohio. Schattenhalb is approx. 40 km due South of Luzern close to where Hwy 6 and 11 join heading West at Meiringen. My road map also has an index giving the Zip Code as 3860. Happy Holidays to all Tony in Louisiana

    1. [SWITZ] village listing for all of CH
    2. Dear Swiss genealogy friends: I have updated my "village listing" for all the communities in Switzerland. No, I did not add any new villages, the webpage was not working correctly after the Geocities to Yahoo!Geocities switchover last summer. This is an small sample of what you will find: CH postal code ...........canton abbreviation .....................village name 8355 TG Aadorf 5000 AG Aarau 5001 AG Aarau 5004 AG Aarau 3270 BE Aarberg 4663 AG Aarburg 4912 BE Aarwangen 8607 ZH Aathal-Seegräben 8522 TG Aawangen Anyway, you have several options for either viewing or downloading the data. Start at: http://www.geocities.com/swissschmutz/chpostal.html Which offers basically 3 choices: 1) html format (195 KB) 2) text format (194 KB) - it will show as a webpage, but the hyperlinks have been removed 3) MS Excel spreadsheet format (763 KB) The files will take a minute or 2 to load. Be patient. If you want to jump right to the list to be viewed on your browser, go to: http://www.geocities.com/swissschmutz/chpostal-count.html Once you have found your village and the associated canton, then jump over to SwissGen's LDS village listing for parish and other records: http://swiss.genealogy.net/ldsloc-m.htm best wishes in your continued research, Dave Schmutz SwissGen volunteer

    2. Olivier & Stella Chan Pasteur
    3. I use GeneWeb, a genealogy freeware developped by a French researcher at the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control (INRIA). The interface is done by any Web navigator: Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc. The pages are not precomputed. Each request, even the simple access to someone's personal record will create the page dynamically. The program is specialized in relationship and consanguinity computing. It can display pages in Chinese, Czech, German, Danish, English, Esperanto, Spanish, Finnish, French, Hebrew, Icelandic, Italian, Dutch, Norwegian, Portuguese, Swedish. Information update (adding, modification, deletion of persons and families) can be done under the navigator, like the rest. It is possible to customize the welcome page and the other displayed pages, changing the background color or pattern, the fonts colors, and the default used language. A program is provided to build a GeneWeb base from a GEDCOM file. Some options allows to adjust parameters. Conversely, it is possible to create a GEDCOM file from a GeneWeb database. In short, it is a very powerful software and it's free! You can see see GeneWeb working at http://www.genealogie.to/cgi-local/geneweb.cgi?b=pasteur;lang=en . For more information on the sofware itself, go to http://cristal.inria.fr/~ddr/GeneWeb/.
