If so, would there be copies available anywhere in the Metro Washington, DC area? Can anyone advise me how to get in touch with the Societ Swisse Mennonite? Many thanks for helping if you can. Ed, This is probably not "codem" but "eodem," Latin for meaning that the baptism date was the same as the previous entry. Rick Saunders http://pweb.netcom.com/~fzsaund/0.html
Hello Listers, Have come across the word "codem" in a Basel birth record: actually in the margin. 1 person told me that this refers to an illegitimate birth. But I know these parents were married at the time of child's birth. Is there an alternative meaning? Ed

Writing letters using umlauts and special characters. To get the dots over the "a,e,o,u" or a roof over an "a" or a curling tail on a "c", use the Special Character Map on your computer. It may be best to have a 3x5 card and pencil handy to write them down. (note: > means then click on..) Click on "Start" >help >index Then type in sp Highlight special character>display>click here The computer screen should now show a chart of the special characters. Make sure the FONT is Arial, Times Roman, Courier. Wigding won't work. The bottom two rows are for UPPER and LOWER case letters. Click on one of the letters and see what is in the right hand corner of the chart. It should read ALT+ followed by 4 numbers. Example: ä - ALT+0228; ö - ALT+0246 So, while holding down the ALT key, and using the NUMERIC Keypad on the right side of your keyboard, type in 0228 to get the ä, etc.... So you won't have to look it up every time, use the 3x5 card to write them down and place it by your computer. Happy Hunting. Tony in Louisiana
Hi list [especially Regula and Wolf and other Swiss members], I am working on another translation, this time of Heer's chapter on the Martis. I need help translating a few final "mystery" words. I've exhausted all my dictionaries and history books here. Here are the words, in context: "Phragnei" [It's 1732, and a conference is settling a dispute about the transport of grain through Glarus. "...und das von selbigem unterwegs nichts auf "PHRAGNEI" weder im Zu"rchergebiet...noch anderswo abgeladen noch verkauft werde."] "S.S.S." [ They're talking about an agreement between Switzerland and Germany in 1915-16. "...die Gru"ndung der S.S.S. die daru"ber wachen sollte, das nicht Vorra"te, die der Schweiz geliefert wurden, den Feinden weitergegeben wurden."] "Lauis" [Where is this? Is it in Canton Tiscino? If so, what's its name today? The people are referred to as "Los".] "Fahrtsfeter" [It's 1836, and this Marti, who is a minister, is participating as a travelling preacher. "Nach Wiedereinf"uhrung der gemeinsamen FAHRTSFETER..."] "Zahnbringen" [Dr. Marti is successfully stopping the smallpox epidemics with his introduction of the vaccine. But, there are still problems. "...bevor ich auf eines gestossen, welches an schwerem ZAHNBRINGEN starb."] "Handgelu"bde" [Back to the conference on grain transport. "Zu dem End beha"lt sich Zu"rich zu allen Zeiten vor, no"tigenfalls die glarnerischen Kornha"ndler in ein HANDGELU"BDE su nehmen..."] Thanks in advance for your help. Sue Wolf s-wolf@mindspring.com

Swiss Rooters, This is not about genealogy. Just memories. Each Christmas Eve, mom would cut a large onion in half, top to bottom. She would then take 12 of the shells and place them on a tray. By each shell, she wrote a month of the year from Jan thru Dec. When everyone was ready to go to bed, she put a teaspoon of salt into each shell. On Christmas morning, looking at the amount of liquid, she would indicate which months in the coming year would be dry and which were wet. I remember some leaves were overflowing while the one next to it was dry as a bone. Has anyone else done or seen this? In my old age, Christmas time brings back wonderful memories. Happy Holidays, Tony in Louisiana
Hello All ! I would say that Rieschweiler = Richwiller, Alsace. This could also explain the Lupperweil misspelling (weil or weiler in Elsaessi = wil in Schwitzertütsch ) Sincerely Guillaume PS Elsaessi and Schwitzertütsch are the german dialects spoken respectively in Alsace and Switzerland. ----- Message d'origine ----- De : BSte902278@aol.com À : SWITZERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Envoyé : vendredi 10 décembre 1999 23:07 Objet : [SWITZ] Rieschweiler Parish Records Hello All, Stumped again! I joined this group due to the fact that a surname that I am working on is possibly from Switzerland or that region. The name has been listed as Deibelbesin, Debelbesin, Teufelbesin, Dreibelbesin, & about 5 other spellings. They settled on Devilbiss & Divelbiss the second generation here in America. The background of the surname is a group of children came on the ship "Britannia" to Philadelphia in 1731. They settled in the Old Monocacy section of Maryland & Pennsylvania. They were named: Johan Michael, Magdalena, Johan Georg, Margarita Elizabeth Barbara, Casper. They listed being born in Baden, with one being born in Alsace. Thank you for any help you can provide.
