Dear Fred, are you sure this is meant to be a profession - and not referring to the surname Meyer ? To say for sure, you'd have to quote the full context. In farming villages in Bavaria the largest farm would often be called "Maier Farm" - and in many cases the owner would in later times also be the Mayor; at the time of surname creation this would have had a slightly different meaning, but still implying that the owner had a certain standing in the community. I'm not familiar with this convention in Switzerland - which doesn't mean it was not the case in cantons I'm not familiar with ;-). Happy New Year to all. I am researching the Thomi family, specifically John (Hans) Thomi born in Biglen, Canton Bern, on May 31,1879. I am also trying to find information on his father, Hans, born December 25, 1845 in Canton Bern. Any help would be appreciated!
Hi Listers, I'm translating my Familytree from German to English. Some ancester's occupation was : <Meyer> as in Meyerhansjoggi. (Hansjoggi means Hans Jakob.) What is the definition of <Meyer> . Was he a Reeve (Vogt) or Mayor (Buergermeister) ? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Fred

It is up along the northern border of the Canton with Lichtenstein and Austria bordering it on the north. It stretches from just to the east of Landquart (where the Landquart River joins the Rhine) east past Schiers, then tending more southeasterly to Klosters. One branch of the river trends south towards Davos from there, I'm not sure if the Swiss consider that part of the Prätigau valley or not. The name is believed to be possibly linked to the tribe living in the area in Roman times. Regards, Mike Hobart

I am searching for any information on Henry(Heinrik?) Frauenfelder. He was born in Andelfingen Switzerland and left Flaach for America between 1880 and 1885. In 1885 he was 55 yrs old. The Kansas census of 1885 said he was a widower. He does not show up in the federal 1880 census. What port would he likely leave from? Would there be a record of his leaving the country? Thanks you for your help. Gary Lundquist
I have finished indexing "Betschart von Muotathal," which is a compliation of the Betschart families of Muotathal, Kanton Schwyz (and elsewhere). It's not a compilation of EVERYONE with the Betschart surname, but there's 5100 Betscharts in it (give or take a few), all descended from the same couple (Erni Betschart, b. ca. 1485, and Anna in der Matt or Indermatt). In addition, there's more than 2,600 others who are not Betscharts mentioned in this book, with 835 different surnames. I'm not going to list them ALL -- many of them are mentioned only once or twice. But some are mentioned repeatedly, and the odds of someone researching those names finding a link to my Betscharts is pretty good. So here's the abbreviated list; these surnames are mentioned five or more times. E-mail me for more details. The Confederate States of American government ended in 1865 but that sure doesn't mean that the War for Southern Independence ended that year. Don't be too sure, even at this late date, that the SOUTH won't RISE AGAIN! Seriously my father, whose father fought with the 44th Georgia Infantry in that war, still had bitterness about it. Of course I've gotten over it. Oh sure I have. Up the rebels! Gordon Hale Grand Prairie, Texas
Could someone please give me a more specific definition of the Prattigau? My Swiss family is from the canton of Graubunden. Thanks much and 2000 good wishes for this new year to all of you! Pat Juon
Dear Bette, Can't answer about the port of entry, but if you are speaking of the US Civil War, it was over in 1865. Betty in Idaho
This is a notification to anyone living in Switzerland who can supply me with the data concerning: #1. "KOHLER", FROM ELAY, SEEHOF, ALLE in the canton of BERNE. In the years around "1867)." #2. "Elisabetha RAIS" & his wife. Please contact Gene KOHLER at e-mail: > <SKARBO@aol.com> USA. MPLS. MN.
My husbands grandparents came to America in the early 1900's from Switzerland and we have been trying to do a family tree for his side of the family. Hans Rothlisberger was his grandfather, and Rosa Yost was his grandmother. They were married here in California. Rosa also had a brother and a sister that immigrated to the West coast. Would love to find more about the families of both of them. Sharon
