Geneva, 9 January 2000. Hello Everyone! There are no official rules country wide in Switzerland. One can go to a local non- Geneva city cemetery and the regulations are extremely different from another commune in the same Canton. I can tell you that we have found tombstones that are 50 years old or more in Switzerland, and elsewhere than the French speaking area of Switzerland. So please remember that if the commune decides what rules apply, Heimberg in Canton Bern will have to be consulted for their local ordinances. Sincerely yours, Anne-Catherine Weber CEG / CGR / EIG Cabinet d'Etudes Genealogiques Center for Genealogical Research Estudio de Investigaciones Genealogicas Geneve - Geneva - Ginebra Suisse / Switzerland / Suiza E-mail: cgr@genealogyrsch.com genrsch@gve.ch genrsch@canada.com genrsch@correoweb.com
And now I know why, when I went to Freienstein, where my Schurters have lived for centuries, the oldest Schurter gravestone was from the 1960s. Couldn't figure it out for the life of me.
Thanks! That is pretty interesting and can be helpful for people who are looking for tombstones. I guess they have to start in the proverbial "back yard." I am searching for descendents of "Messerschmidt" (knifemaker) Schneider and Caroline Gimpel, who emigrated from Emmendingen, Baden, Germany about 1849 to Geneva Switzerland. Emigrating with them were their children, Karl, William, August, Caroline Oliver (1834-1901), Louise (1837-1899), and Frederika (1842-1893). Frederika married a Mr. Campioto, or Campicta, and they had a daughter, Marguerite, who married a Mr. Brachard. The Brachard's had sons Charles, Pierre, and Parc. Karl had a son, Charles Frederick (1855-1917). Charles Frederick also had a son, Charles Louis born in 1882 who, in turn, had a son Frederick Christion, born in 1907, who married Claire and had daughters Sylvia (1958) and Catherine (1961) I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might have links to these ancestors of mine. I am "Messerschmidt" Schneider's great great granddaughter. Christina Schneider Howard Dayton, Ohio USA

Happy New Year to everyone! I have just received news that I may be traveling in Europe this summer. I am considering taking extra time to do some genealogy research. I am asking for help from those of you who have made such trips. What documents and records should I take with me? What did you do in preparation for such a trip? Looking back what do you wish you had done before you left? My grandfather was born in Kerns but his father was from Lungren, where would I find the best information for that area? Thank you in advance for your assistance. Kimberly Zumstein Brown searching for: Zumstein, Von Rotz, Durrer, Yungen/Jungen, Wenger, Ritter, and Germann

Hi Margaret, Information that may commonly be found in a death record includes: 1. Name of deceased 2. occupation of deceased 3. whether single, married, or widowed 4. if female, maiden name, and name of her husband; in earlier records (1700s) a female may buried as "Susanna Megert, wife of Christian Segessemann" and listed in the index under Megert; in later records (1800s) it may appear as "Susanna Segessemann, born Megert, Christian's wife/widow" and listed in the index under Segessemann 5. Name of father (and if deceased) 6. occupation of father 7. residence of father 8. date of death 9. date of burial 10. time of death (hour) 11. disease/cause of death 12. age at death 13. location of death 14. residence at death 15. date of birth/baptism Rick Saunders http://pweb.netcom.com/~fzsaund/0.html

Hi Everyone, I would like to ask if someone knows of the various type of information included on a death record. I have an 1871 record in German from Treiten, Bern, Switzerland. Today at the LDS I found the death record dated 1871 of my gg grandfather Peter WEBER. After his name I can tell it records the name of his father, Jakob. However after that I can only guess what the next 9 words are saying. I can tell that it ends in the name of is origin Treiten. Then the record lists his date of birth and date of death, and then maybe date of burial. Have any of you knowledge of other information included on a death record? Thank you very much for your time in answering this question. Margaret in Maryland.

He died sometime after 1766 in Salisbury District,Rowan county NC. JACOB GOSS born about 1671 also in Switzerland.I have also seen the name listed as HANS JACOB GOSS. You might want to check with the LDS family history library catalogue section on their site and then search using this town and then country of Switzerland. I did this for Dorlikon where those with the surname of EPPRECHT came from in 1743. I found out that this village was renamed around 1850-1870 I don't remember exact dates) to Thalheim an der Thur. This site has helped me very much and now I have this new name and printed up a map of Switzerland using Encarta 1999 and now have a map with this villages name on it. This sentence, "1784 bin ich zu einem Vorspräch wehählt worden," was attributed to my great-great-great-great grandfather, Franz Carli Betschart, who was a judge in Kanton Schwyz. As a result, his descendants were known as Vorsprächig. What does that sentence mean, and what's a Vorspräch? Also -- I know this is a long shot -- but does anyone know of a way I could find out which newspapers were operating in Zürich in 1884? Apparently one of my Vorsprächig cousins became a newspaper editor in Zürich in 1884, but the name of the newspaper was omitted... Joann Betschart (Lunzä Schützenhaus) | http://www.c-zone.net/merlaan "Amman Hans, as he was known, was a crude, immodest, dictatorial, sarcastic man who had no respect for either clergy or the laity. Nevertheless, he was a judge." -- Brief biography of Hans Betschart (ca. 1580-1650)
Hi everyone, I have not been able to find the town of Rebingen, Switzerland. My g-greatgrandmother, Katherina Ruf, brought her confirmation certificate, dated March 3rd, 1844, with her when she immigrated to US. It states that she is from Rebingen. Does anyone know where this town is? Could it be town that has changed the name? She married Rudolph Bechley(Baechle,Bachle,Beckley) and they had a child born in Phil, Pa in 1862. I do not know if they married here or before they came to States. His town of origin in Switzerland is unknown, Ohio census looks like Oberengstringen, but have not been able to confirm this either. Can anyone help me with these questions, or tell me where to go for information. I have checked most of the Swiss sites on www. Thanks for any help. Donna
