I am searching for the ancestors of my wife Monique Koch. Her family is from Tamins in Graubuenden. Her family came to Maastricht in the Netherlands in 1815. About 1700 in the churchrecords i see names of the months like Hornig (I think this is another name for february) and Brachmount (?). Who can give me the names of the months which were in use in that period in Graubuenden, their translation to our 'modern' monthnames and what the meaning of these names is? I am looking ideally for the 32 quartiers of this Elizabeth v Planta, or an agnatic ascendance will do - Could someone direct me to a source which might be able to provide me with this info...or even better, a member of the family (there are lots about I believe!) who might correspond! I received a diskette from a friend in Switz. doing research for me and he sent me two database files on my families and I am unable to open them with my software. Nick" the family of Campiche shows in the Vaud area from before 1800 only in the town of Sainte-Croix. There is a second listing in the town of Agiez, Vaud that lists them coming from Sainte-Croix in about 1842. This is from Swiss Surnames. BUT: THERE is a listing in Mario VAn Moos "Bibliography of Swiss Genealogies which you would do well to follow up on: 1) Campiche Franz Raoul: La famille CAMPICHE de Ste-Croix (et aussi de Agiez). Notices genealogiques. Nyon 1943 - 98 f., genealogie (in der SGFF Bibliothek)) 2) same author - same title - Notices genealogiques. Yverdon-les-Bains 1988 - 1 classeur, 116 f. ;(in der Schweizerischen Landesbibliothek). There ;is also a new site on the Roots Web for Vaud you might check out. I soon will visit Switzerland and need help locating Birth records in the 1840's. How do I find them in civil record form in Eggiwil(North of Bern) and in Glattfelden (North of Zurich) Where do I go? Is it called a canton office? What is the word for this office? What are the hours of operation? I plan to be there the 8th and 10th of February. Will I be running into any problem holidays that will close offices? How do I present myself? Is there a Swiss German request letter I can access? What can I expect as a response? VURLOD is mentioned in Familiennamenbuch (http://swiss.genealogy.net/famnam-m.htm) for Ormont-Dessous (since prior to 1800) as only citizenship for that family prior to 1949 - but you know that already (you ordered the correct films). You've been to the Swiss Surname Directory (http://swiss.genealogy.net/surnam-m.htm) - so I wouldn't consider you "another newbie" in the first place ;-) ! There is no mention Verlod. MOREILLON hold old (prior 1800) citizenships in Bex, Gryon, Vevey (all in VD) - full data would have to be entered into the "Directory" upon request. Again, you have ordered Gryon films, so seem to be knowing where your line was at home. Unfortunately neither name is mentioned in the bibliography by Mario von Moos. I have no experience with research in Vaud (hardly speak any French either), so I cannot give any more specific advice - but a general question : what time frame are you looking for ? Both films you have ordered are dates prior 1875 only (like most films of Swiss church records) - are you that far back already ? Then you may not be interested, or at least would not have to rely on civil registry data - and consequently would not need any permission to do this research - nor would anyone else doing it for you. All this stupid new civil ordinance business with its restrictions applies only to civil registry data after 1876; these offices also hold few information prior to 1876 - usually from early to mid 19th century (as I said, I don't know the situation in VD) - and a lazy civil registrar might claim you would need a permission for those older information as well. I would recommend to contact the regional genealogical society (http://swiss.genealogy.net/ver/vdinfo-e.htm) - they ought to know what sort of information (how far back) can be expected in VD civil registry offices, and how the "average registrar" deals with pre-1876 information. I have requested the films for Gryon and Ormont-Dessous from LDS but they are yet to arrive. I feel I am battling both time (he has had three major surgeries in the past year) and language and regulations here. It is even more complicated as he is in Chicago and I am in Seattle and the information is in Switzerland! I have three questions, please: First, Is it ever possible, under health circumstances, to allow someone to give a Power of Attorney to get the research on one's family? My cousin would never be able to travel to Switzerland because of his age and health. Can a genealogical researcher in Switzerland do this with a Power of Attorney? I am trying to trace my family and am having a terrible time. Here is all I have my ggrandfather - George "Emile" Hamm b. 4/1875 in Germany - Immigrated to America - (Laurel County Kentucky) in 1892 - Died there in 1900. He married my ggrandmother - Mary C. Lees born November 20, 1879 in Colmar, Alsace, Lorraine to Xavier and Madeline Lees. (They immigrated to the US, in 1883). There is a John Hamm who witnessed the marriage but I am not sure if this was his father. How can one track the family line, or find a birth certificate or the passenger list or anything.
