    3. Hi; I am not an expert, but my Lenggenhager family left St. Gallen, Switzerland in 1750. The Archive in that Canton said the main route was down the Rhine to Holland. 1. AW: [SWITZ] Surname Ehrenzeller
    2. Seelentag Wolfhart Dr. KSSG_RO
    3. In 1995 there was also an article on Ehrenzeller of St.Gallen, published in the Year Book of SGFF (Swiss Genealogical Society - http://sgff.genealogy.net) : "Ehrenzeller, Ernst: Nachkommen der St. Galler Familie Ehrenzeller in Pennsylvanien SA". It dealt mainly with a line emigrating to USA, and I would have to check whether it contained info on the origin of the name. This is not mentioned by Mario von Moos (published in 1993) for obvious reasons ;-). Unfortunately the author, a leading historian in canton St.Gallen, died a few years ago. The data is available in the Zivilstandregister. This data includes a great deal of information. What is the Zivilstandregister and is there a way to see this data? Thank you Vicki Omaha, Ne

    3. If anyone has any idea on this, I would appreciate hearing from you. My grandmother, mother, aunt came to the US on the RMS Olympic (sister ship of the Titanic) 1912 - they were living in St. Margrethan, SG in 1911 so I believe that they left from there. My mother said that they left from "Holland". I know that the ship ported at England & Cherbourg France -- but how they boarded the ship if they went to Holland remains a mystery to me. I read that the Olympic was too big to actually go into the port at Cherbourg -- so it is posssible that they were brought out to the Olympic by a ship from Holland or -- if my mother was mistaken -- she was only 9 at the time. Or could the ship have made a stop in Amsterdam or Rotterdam? I tried contacting the Cunard Lines but they didn't respond. If they left from St. Margrethan, SG, what would be the probable route? Can you travel by boat up the Rhein from Lindau or would they have gone by train?? Any knowledge in this area that could provide a clue would be great. Sincerely Claire

    1. [SWITZ] Wuerttemberg
    2. I recently found some information out from the 1850 Census for Clinton County PA. My ancestors say they came from Wuerttemberg Germany. I believe maybe they put this because this is where they applied for their passport. I know this is where a lot of people applied for passports to America. This is all the information I really have I know they also came here in the 1830's. I still have not been able to find the precise city they are from. Can anyone help me? The name on the census reads Frederick Gleice. It is now Glise. I also heard a story that has been passed down, that they originally came from Switzerland and passed through France before coming to Pennsylvania. In France their names were altered and when they got here the names were altered again. I know that Frederick had a wife named Christiana and on her grave it says Christiana Klaiss. If anyone has some information, it would be greatly appreciated. Thx! Aimee Wiseman

    1. [SWITZ] Edna Bentz
    2. Lyle G. Hartman
    3. It was reported in the Baden-Württemberg discussion group that Edna Bentz died in December. She was author of "If I Can You Can Decipher Germanic Records." Many of us taught ourselves to read the old German script using her book. She lived in San Diego. Apparently the book can still be ppurchased directly from a relative (see below). On January 31, Gary Minder posted the following message to that group: > There was much discussion here a few weeks ago concerning the Edna Bentz > book, "If I Can You Can Decipher Germanic Records". > > It was mentioned that Ms. Bentz died last December. > > I was at the San Diego FHC yesterday and found a flyer soliciting the book. > > It's $16.50 each...California residents add $1.28 for tax. 1. [SWITZ] Ports of departure
    2. Lyle G. Hartman
    3. The question "What were the common ports of departure?" is asked frequently in this discussion group. I'm attempting to compile an answer to that question for an FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) list for the group. Le Havre was one of the most common ports of departure, but we know that the answer depends on the time period and the available modes of transportation to a port. If you know your ancestor's port of departure, I'd like to know about it. Please answer as many as you can of the following questions: Canton of origin? (if known) Port of departure? Year & month of departure from the port? Port of arrival? Year & month of arrival at the port? Name of ship? (if known) Length of voyage, in days? (if known) Destination (Country, state, etc.)? If you have spotted an ancestor family from sources such as "Germans to America", and know the ship information, but do not know the Canton of origin, just do not include the Canton name or say "don't know." If you have multiple families who travelled separately, repeat the set of answers for each family. Please do not respond to the list. Respond to me privately at ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ LGHART@ix.netcom.com I'll compile the results and publish them to the list. This is not a very scientific poll, but I believe the results will be interesting to the group. Thank you for your help. Lyle G. Hartman Landenberg, Pennsylvania LGHART@ix.netcom.com

    3. Glen: the name EHRENZELLER appears in Swiss Surnames in only one canton: St Gallen - Oberbu(e)ren (a) from before 1800 St. Gallen (a) In Mario van Moos "Bibliography of Swiss Surnames" there are two listings for the name: 1) Stahelin, Johannes : Stammliste der Familien EHRENZELLER von Oberburen). In Geschichte der Pfarrei Oberburen. Uzwil 1933 - S. 26-33 2) same author: Geschichte der Pfarrei Oberburen (darin Stammliste der Familie EHRENZELLER von Oberburen, 1650-1933). OLberburen, 1933, 192 S. Oberburen 1933 - s. 26-33 (in der Schweizerischen Landesbibliothek). I have a feeling these are both the same book but possibly printed in different locales. The Family History Center has filmed moste of the church books of St. Gallen Canton and a trip to your local center would be in order. Hope this is of help to you.
