Looking for info on Maria SAGER, born 1770 in Graenichen, Switzerland. She married Daniel KYBURZ in Aug. 1800. They had 7 children, then she died, sometime after Feb 1813. Thank you very much for any help, jeni j66lisyj@aol.com
Hello, I just wanted to share my latest find. I have now been able to trace back my Samuel Kyburz to 1506 in Entfelden, Aargau, Switzerland. Thought some of you might be interested. Here it is: Samuel, b. 26 June 1810 <= Daniel, b. 22 June 1777 <= Bernhard, b. 19 Sept 1734 <= Hans (Johannes), b. 02 Dec. 1703 <= Hans, b. 29 Sept. 1661 <= Johannes, b. 29 May 1642 <= Hans, b. 08 Sept. 1605 <= Uli, b. 1564 <= Mr. Kyburz, b. 1506. all born in Entfelden, Aagau, Switzerland. Let me know if any of you want more info, such as their wives, children, etc. jeni j66lisyj@aol.com
I have been very fortunate in receiving quite a few funeral notices that were mailed from Switzerland to my husband's grandparents in Goshen, CT, USA in the early 1900's. There are 3 which mention different surnames than his, and may have been mailed because they were family friends. At this point, my research is just not that far along. They may all be related to his line. I will be glad to share these 3 if I can. They list many family surnames, and could be quite valuable to someone. They are too lengthy to transcribe to the list, but I will post the names below. Contact me if they mean anything to you, and I will work out a way to share them. Oh, they are written in French. Madame Caroline MATTHEY, nee BACHMANN died Grand-Chaumont, 1907 Madame Isabelle VUILLEME, nee Richard (probably connected to my husband's TOUCHONS), died 1895 apparently in West Goshen, CT. Monsieur Edouard MONNIER-RUFFI, died Prises de Gorgier, 1917. All of these may turn out to be connected to his grandparents, William E. TOUCHON and Marie GRAU. William's parents were Jules-Ernest TOUCHON and Julie-Eugenie RICHARD of Neuchatel. Marie's parents were Alexis GRAU and Elise VON KANEL of Fribourg and Neuchatel. If you are interested, contact me. Go under View and find word wrap and check on it and that should help you email to fit the page. I try to keep all my programs on word wrap and that eliminates the problem for others. Bette

Interestingly I, just today, finished reading the detailed diary of Mathias Dürst of Canton Glarus. He along with 193 men, women and children emigrated from Canton Glarus in April 1845. They left from the west end of the Walensee thru the Linktkanal to the Obersee which took them to Zurich. Then by river north to the Rhein River. Only at the town of Laufenburg did they need to portage around a small falls. They then took the Rhein to Rotterdam and Amsterdam, Holland and finally to Nieuwediep, Holland where they boarded the ocean sailing ship. They landed in the US at Baltimore. There final destination was Wisconsin and at a place now called New Glarus. They arrived in August 1845. About 90 miles from my home in Dubuque, Iowa. Canton St. Gallen is immediately east of Canton Glarus. People in St. Gallen certainly had access to the Walensee also. My GGrandfather was from Mels, Canton St. Gallen. Hope this might shed some light on at least one route out. The diary was in a book called New Glarus 1845- 1970. Doug Hilby

Hello list, I've seen multiple requests for the HOWTO of Umlaut usage. I just found a great little freeware <FREE> program call "Umlaut Assistant" by Visual Fantasy. It loads in the tray, small little bar on top, you select which character you'd like and it's on the clipboard ready to paste in your mail or text. Visit the link below and look for Ümlaut Ässistant. Does anyone know what causes some messages to keep going and going without a carriage return? I tend to delete those messages because I don't have time to read all of my e-mail word for word. I just scan for the surnames, especially those in caps (that is really a help)? Anne Bowie

Does anyone have any information on HALTER surname in Switzerland? While flying through Zurich a year or so ago my husband found candy in the airport called HALTER. (strange branding for candy, eh?) Does anyone know anything about the HALTER family which is responsible for that? I believe our HALTERs went from Switzerland to Alsace & then to America early 1800's. Any help is appreciated. Dear Claire My family left eorope 14th of march 1885 from Bordeaux (France) to Chile. I recently found my lost relatives there in Traiguén. In the canton of St. Gall unfortunatelly only passport registers from two "districts" left. If you are interested I could ask the SG state archive if St. Margrethen is included in those registers; drop me a email when yes. Have a nice week! Februar 2000 02:28 An: SWITZERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Betreff: [SWITZ] emmigration migration from St. Gallen If anyone has any idea on this, I would appreciate hearing from you. My grandmother, mother, aunt came to the US on the RMS Olympic (sister ship of the Titanic) 1912 - they were living in St. Margrethan, SG in 1911 so I believe that they left from there. My mother said that they left from "Holland". I know that the ship ported at England & Cherbourg France -- but how they boarded the ship if they went to Holland remains a mystery to me. I read that the Olympic was too big to actually go into the port at Cherbourg -- so it is posssible that they were brought out to the Olympic by a ship from Holland or -- if my mother was mistaken -- she was only 9 at the time. Or could the ship have made a stop in Amsterdam or Rotterdam? I tried contacting the Cunard Lines but they didn't respond. If they left from St. Margrethan, SG, what would be the probable route? Can you travel by boat up the Rhein from Lindau or would they have gone by train?? Any knowledge in this area that could provide a clue would be great.
