Karen : Yes Swiss Surnames indeed does have only one listing for Fete(with umlaut over first e> Canton Bern - Cortebert (from before 1800). That is where to start. Check to see if the church records have been filmed by the Family History Center . They have filmed in the last few years all but sixteen parishes in Bern so probably yours has been filmed. I am just beginning work on the family of my great-grandmother, O'tillia FETE. She was born in Switzerland on 6 June, 1860. Family information indicates that she came to West Virginia in about 1866. Her parents, Nestor and Pauline Fete (and siblings?) died in West Virginia soon after and O'tillia lived with the family of a Lutheran pastor there. Dear Rooters, I have just loaded a page on the Schawalder families of the Schawalder families of canton St.Gallen - all based on data provided by Ernst Schawalder : not many data on individuals, but you might enjoy the coat of arms. As the page is written in German, let me give some explanation in Englisch : The name was likely spelled Schoenwalder originally ("forester looking after the beautiful forest") - this spelling is mentioned in St.Gallen as early as 15th century : no explicit links to these generations is possible due to lack of sources, however. The coat of arms of the Schawalder of Diepoldsau/Schmitter and Widnau is based on a seal used by Johannes Schawalder during 1730...39 : as Johannes Schawalder was a smith, this will be smith's tools - a hammer and another tool we are not quite sure about. Take a look at : http://www.eye.ch/swissgen/members/schaern1.htm The Diepoldsau line uses yellow on blue, the Widnau line black on yellow. Compare the design with the seal also depicted on that page. The coat of arms of the St.Gallen line (originally from Schmitter) is much more recent : not dating back to 1796, as one may assume - this is the year of birth of Hans Jakob Schawalder, the oldest proven ancestor of the St.Gallen line. I have lots of information about the Schlappi family from Zweisimmen, Bern, Switzerland as they are part of my family. There are so many Christian Schlappi's born about 1800 in Zweisimmen that I'm not sure which one is yours. for instance: Christian Schlappi-born 10 Nov 1813 in Zweisimmen, Bern, Switz md to Susanna Schlappi 10 jun 1842 I have a whole book full of Schlappi's gathered by our family over the years from the research of Julius Billeter.
