    3. Hi folks, Just re-subscribed after a number of months away...with some help from Outriggger, I broke through my brick wall! (Outriggger, if you're out there...THANKS!!) Now I am inundated with information that will take me a while to wade through (rather happily, too!) At any rate, I've been finding a regular rogues' gallery...here's the story, convolutions and all. The ancestor who emigrated to the US left behind a wife and 4 children. He was faithfully sending back money for the family for a time. In the meantime, he met and supposedly married the woman we've all believed to be great-great grandma and proceeded to have children with her. Two years after his first American child was born, his Swiss wife gives birth to another child. Now this is where it gets interesting...the person who's the unofficial genealogist for the village they lived in says that according to the christening record, the priest listed the ancestor's *father* as the father of this baby. My question is this: is it possible that ancestor's father was named as the FOB because ancestor had deserted the family? I am not going to be judgmental, I just would like to know if this was a practice to legitimize children. Any thoughts? Elisabeth ö¿ö

    1. [SWITZ] RE: Wachter,Zumback,Nussbaumer,Liechti,Moser & Gyger

    3. Hi Joan, You should first determine from what localities WECHTER/WACHTER held citizenship in Switzerland from either a check of the "Familiennamenbuch der Schweiz" or by submitting a request at: http://www.eye.ch/swissgen/surnam-m.htm on QUERY PAGE. Offhand, I would suspect that your "Laugerville" is actually Lauperswil in the Signau district of Canton Bern. If you find that WECHTER/WACHTER held citizenship at Lauperswil, the church records from there have been microfilmed, and can be ordered through a Family History Center, if you have access to one. It should be possible to trace the ancestry of your family back through those records. I also recognize LIECHTI as a name occurring in the Signau area, and you can determine exactly which communites as above. NUSSBAUM(ER) I believe is a fairly common name to many areas in Switzerland, and also occurs in the Signau area. I not sure GYGER occurs in the Signau area, but you can determine that as above. I do know that it occurs a little west of there in the area south of Bern. It is likely that all of these families were from the same general area. If you start with your last known Swiss ancestor, and work back through the church records, they will usually identify the location of the earlier generations, either in the marriage/baptismal records, or in circumstantial evidence in noting where the sponsors at baptism were from. The church records for most Canton Bern communities are available on microfilm, that you can search most other locations learned also. Rick Saunders http://pweb.netcom.com/~fzsaund/0.html

    1. [SWITZ] Response to Coat of Arms query by Wolf
    2. Trudy A Plotz
    3. I finally had a chance to view the arms on http://www.eye.ch/swissgen/members/schaern1.htm The object depicted is a key. I don't know how a key would connect with a smith's hammer, but keys are often used to represent civic positions like a mayor. I enjoy heraldry and will try to help help anyone with questions about what is on a coat of arms. <snip> The coat of arms of the Schawalder of Diepoldsau/Schmitter and Widnau is based on a seal used by Johannes Schawalder during 1730...39 : as Johannes Schawalder was a smith, this will be smith's tools - a hammer and another tool we are not quite sure about. Take a look at : http://www.eye.ch/swissgen/members/schaern1.htm The Diepoldsau line uses yellow on blue, the Widnau line black on yellow. Compare the design with the seal also depicted on that page. The coat of arms of the St.Gallen line (originally from Schmitter) is much more recent : not dating back to 1796, as one may assume - this is the year of birth of Hans Jakob Schawalder, the oldest proven ancestor of the St.Gallen line. 1. [SWITZ] Surname Drum/Drumm
    2. Betty & Joe Griffin
    3. Hi List subscribers, I am new to the list and I hope my first query is not out of order. While I have nothing documented as yet, one branch of our family reports our earliest known ancestor, Johann Drum was born c. 1725 in Switzerland. Do any of you have any knowledge of the Drum/Drumm name in Switzerland in the past? Another general question, if you please. Was there a particular port of departure by those leaving Switzerland for America in the early to mid 1700's? Betty

    1. [SWITZ] Swiss family names Wachter,Zumback,Nussbaumer,Liechti,Moser & Gyger
    2. Hi. I'm new on the list and am attempting to find where in Switzerland my ancestors came from and from which port they left to come to America. I know that my gr. grandfather, Frederick Wechter (Wachter) was born in Laugerville, Canton Berne, SW on 17 Oct 1836. His wife was Elizabeth Nussbaum (Neusbaum, Nussbaumer) who was born on 30 Jul 1843 in Wayne Co., OH but whose family originated somewhere in SW. Her father was Jakob Nussbaumer. I'm also looking for gg grandparents Peter Wachter and Maria Zumback; dates of birth unknown in SW. Other family names from SW are Elizabeth Liechti (dob 25 Nov 1814) whose father was Christian Liechti and mother was Barbara Moser. Also have ggg grandparents with names of Urs Nussbaumer and Katharina Gyger. Can someone tell me how I might find where in SW these families came from and also where to find the ports from which Frederick Wechter and the Nussbaumer families left to come to America? I would really appreciate any help you might be able to give. Thanks. Joan DeCamara Vancouver, WA

I have not yet established her ancestry , though I do have several possibilities. It's just a matter of time. I hope to establish the pedigree back to the 1600's . 3. Cindy: Swiss surnames has the family of BUHLER in Hombrechtikon, Canton Zurich from before 1800. Hombrechtikon is in the south of Zurich Canteon not too far from the Zurich Sea. In Mario Van Moos "Bibliography of Swiss Genealogies" there is the following listing" Weisbrod-Buhler, Marion: Silberne Schweningen. Aufzeichnungen zur Familien- geschichte der Waldbuhler (= BUHLER von Hombrecktikon und Henau). Stafa,1957. 291 S. Ahnentafel (in dere Schweizereischen Landesbibliothek). Alther, Ernste Walter: Die Familie BUHLER (von Hombrechtikon ) under deren Zweig in Uzwil. Flawil. 1978. (in der SGFF-Bibliothek). Also Julius Billeter has 'BUHLER" in his Notes. But not sure from what area. Buhler is quite a common name in Switzerland. Hope this will be of help to you in your research. Be sure to check with the Family History Center . They have microfilm of most of the church records of Zurich , along with census records and household registers for many of the towns.
