    1. [SWITZ] Stierli Surname
    2. darcyboock
    3. I am researching my ancestor Barbara Stierli, daughter of Susanna Stierli (which tells me she is illegitimate) as stated on her marriage certificate to Johann Gottlieb Hottmann dated 5 Aug. 1856 in Sauk County, Wisconsin, USA. Barbara and Johann had a daughter Elisabeth born July 1854 in Switzerland. By this birth date I am calculating Barbara's birthdate to be about 1834. They immigrated to America in 1854 and to Wisconsin by 1856 when my great-grandfather Christian Frederich Hottmann was born. Barbara died in Dec. 1857 in Arena, Iowa County, Wisconsin. I have checked the Swiss Surname Book for villages where the Stierli name existed prior to 1800 and from 1800-1900. I have pinpointed six localities in Canton Aargau: Aristau, Boswil, Gebenstorf, Goeslikon, Muri, and Turgi and three in Canton Zurich: Birmensdorf, Kloten, and Urdorf. The LDS has microfilmed Buergerakten (citizen records???) for the surname Stierli in Aristau from 1630-1791, but this is too early for me. Where do I go from here? Johann Gottlieb Hottmann was from Grunbach, Wuerttemberg, Germany. Darcy from River Falls, Wisconsin

    3. To Doug and any others, researching ancestors in the Canton of Uri in Switzerland, be sure to check out Wolf Seelentag's wonderful website: http://www.eye.ch/swissgen/kant/ursurn-e.htm The surname Wildi is not listed, but Baumann is and this website will tell how many Baumann's are in various villages, and the LDS film number to look at to find out all about the Baumann's. Good luck

    1. [SWITZ] Donier Family, Graubunden Canton
    2. Hello Everyone, So far, I can trace my line through Peter Donier and Maria Bardill married 1833, Christian Donier and Maria Florinin married 1784, and maybe Georg Donier and Ursula Casparin married 1758. Peter had several brothers and sisters. As far as I know, Peter and Maria are the only ones who came to America in 1845. Peter and Maria came with their 2 year old son Christian and settled in Madison County, Illinois. Then, Peter went back to Switzerland for some unknown reason, leaving his family there. Can anyone make a connection to this line? I have a feeling that this line is connected with the Buttes, Neuchatel area, because there seems to be quite a few Doniers in that area in the 1700's. I just haven't gotten that far yet. Also, can anyone tell me if there are any Donier's still in the Klosters area? I know that there was a Joel Donier born 1847 and a Georg Donier born 1856 in Klosters. I was wondering if there might be any of their descendants still living. If you have a good idea of what area your family came from in Switzerland, the Church of Latter Day Saints microfilm is a real jewel. All you have to do is find the nearest Family Resource Center and order the microfilm you need. The only cost to you is the cost of shipping and your time. Their internet site, www.familysearch.com, lists all the available microfilm. I didn't ever think I could find so much. The records may be intimidating at first because of the handwriting, but stick to it. Lisa Woods

    2. Hello listers, I am new to this list and I'm searching for the surname SPAGNOLI from the Canton Ticino. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find out which village or town in Ticino. Valentine and Joseph SPAGNOLI left Switzerland in the mid-1800's and went to California for the goldrush. Their sister Adelaide followed in 1868. Joseph became a very successful mine owner and a pioneer of Mariposa County, CA. I would enjoy hearing from anyone who might have any information regarding the SPAGNOLI name. 1. RE: [SWITZ] SURNAME BUFTER
    2. Dear Patricia in Maryland: According to Familiennamenbuch der Schweiz (Swiss Surnames), 1989 American edition, there are NO listings for: Bufter Buffter Büfter Büffter This does not mean that it is not a Swiss surname, but that when the data was collected in 1962, there were no more in Switzerland at that time. So, the conclusions could be: 1) It really is not Swiss 2) The surname 'daughtered' out. 3) All of them emigrated. You do, however, mention Palatinate as the possible area. This is NOT in Switzerland, further north in Germany (or rather what areas are now known as Germany). Please check the German genealogy website for further info. Upper Palatinate/Oberpfalz http://www2.genealogy.net/gene/reg/BAY/opf-en.htm Rheinland-Pfalz / Rhineland-Palatinate http://www2.genealogy.net/gene/reg/RHE-PFA/rhein-p.html http://www2.genealogy.net/gene/reg/rindex.htm is an excellent list of areas in Germany (in which I found Palatinate). best wishes, Dave Schmutz SwissGen volunteer -----Original Message----- From: Pat & Gary Kelly [mailto:pgkelly@erols.com] Sent: Monday, February 21, 2000 7:19 PM To: SWITZERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SWITZ] SURNAME BUFTER Hi, I am helping a friend get started on her family. 1. [SWITZ] Church Picture in Lauperswil
    2. Robert Rothenbuhler
    3. Hi List, Hopefully, someone on this list can help me. I'm trying to find a person who lives in or near Lauperswil, Switzerland that can take a couple of pictures for me. I would like a picture of the church in Lauperswil. I believe there is only one church in this village. This church has our family coat-of-arms on one of its windows. I do have a picture of this window. I want some pictures of different views of the church. I will pay for someone's time, film developing, and postage. If there is more than one church in this village, I can describe the window. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks, robert rothenbuhler new braunfels, texas piepint@nbtx.com

    1. [SWITZ] Seeb found
    2. Jean Hoffman
    3. Thanks so much to the very kind folks on this list who have responded with the location of Seeb. It is a village north of the city of Zurich and its old church records are in the parish of Bulach. I am confident this is the correct location for our Anna Margaretha Meyer (12 Aug 1708) as she was the wife of Hans Jacob Hoffmann of neighboring Oberglatt as recorded in the household censuses of Oberglatt. I was also asked about "Tracing Your Swiss Roots" which is a book by Maralyn A. Wellauer published in 1979, rev. 1988. It is one of three books the libraries here have that are very helpful. The others are "Handy Guide to Swiss Genealogical Records" by Jared H. Suess, 1978 and "Swiss Genealogical Research: an Introductory Guide" by Paul Anthon Nielson, 1979. But some of the best help I am getting is right here on the list, on the web pages and from the Swiss Surname Directory. Thanks much! Jean Hoffman djhoff@ix.netcom.com
