Hello fellow listers: I've just found out that my grgrgrandmother was educated in a private school in Switerland in late 1870's or 1880's. This education was paid for by her VERY rich uncle in New York city. Trying to locate the school is nearly impossible from this side of the ocean, but some of you may know which schools were patronized by wealthy New Yorkers at that time - some of you may even have had ancestors go to school there! I hope there is someone on this list who can assist me to find the right school and perhaps to eventually access the old records of it. Thanks so much for your assistance. There are MARCHANDS IN Canton Bern before 1800 and this is where I would start looking. The towns are Court Loveresse Roches,BE Sonvilier (which is the town you think they came from. If there was some kind of a case before the Bishop there might be something in the church Records relating to it. Many or most of the Bern Church Records have been filmed by the Family History Center - a place to start). On another note I was doing research for someone who was descended illegitimately from someone in Canton Zurich and when I wrote to the archives I was sent a paper on a court case where the woman took the man to court and won a judgement from him. These records at least in Zurich have not been filmed so you might have to write to the Canton Archives of Bern. But first try the Family History Center. Good hunting. Hi, I am new to the list and would like to ask if anyone has any information on the AEPPLI, APPEL, or EPLEY surnames. I have seen many different spellings. I am told that the surname originates in Switzerland.I found info on a JOHANNES AEPPLI who was christened 27, Jan, 1720 in Waldkirch, St. Gallen. The info says his father was JOHANN AEPPLI and mother was VERONICA GROEBIN. This came from the LDS files online. The knowledge I have on my line of EPLEY'S starts with JOHN EPPLEE who apparently came over to the US into Pennsylvania (maybe by way of Germany). His record says he was born abt. 1720 and died Nov. 1795. He married ROSINA __?__. There is a land grant for him in Manheim Townsip, York Co. PA. Children of JOHN and ROSINA EPPLEE: 1. MATTHIAS EPPLY b. ?? d.?? Married (1) ANNA MARIA RITTER Oct. 23, 1764 in St. Matthews Church, Hanover, PA (2) CHRISTINA RISEDEL/RIDDLE before 1771, daughter of DONINIANA RISEDEL/RIDDLE 2. HANS PETER EPPLY JOHN EPPLEE was my G-G-G-G-G grandfather. MATTHIAS was my G-G-G-G grandfather. I am trying to make the European connection to my family would be of great help. Thanks in advance for any information on the above or any info on the surname in general. I do know that there are several references to it way back around Zurich and in the St. Gallen area. Also, I wondered if the place, APPENZEL would be connected? What does that word mean in English? Thanks. Bambi Setzer bobsetzer@worldnet.att.net
Beverly: Both families you are searching FEUTZ (FEUZ) and GERTSCH are listed in Swiss Surnames as in Canton Bern: FEUZ: Beatenberg (a) from before 1800 Gsteigwiler (a) Lauterbrunnen (a) Unterseen (a) Many of them moved at later times into other cantons but all seem to be basically from Bern. GERTSCH - also Canton Bern Lauterbrunnen (a) Lutschental (a) Neither is in Mario Van Moos "Bibliography of Swiss Genealogies" The Family History Center has filmed now much of the church records of Canton Bern and that is where I would start to find relatives. And I would start with Lauterbrunnen. Hope this will be of help to you. Hi Everyone, I am very interested in finding anyone who has these surnames and/or has information on them. The Gautschi surname is from Reinach. The Karcher surname is from Ofwilen, Elsas Thank you, Jennie
Dear Alexis: The Switzerland-L@rootsweb.com list has not expanded into separate areas inside of Switzerland. Your posting here is a good start, but you may also wish to 'register' your interest in both surnames by retrieving the data from SwissGen's "Swiss Surname Directory." Please read about it at: http://swiss.genealogy.net/surnam-m.htm and follow the link to the QUERY PAGE to obtain what data is already available. best wishes in your continued research, Dave Schmutz SSD admin. -----Original Message----- From: Alexis [mailto:alexisj@gte.net] Sent: Thursday, March 02, 2000 2:38 PM To: SWITZERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SWITZ] JAQUES surname I am hoping to be connected to a Prele, Switzerland list for my 2-g-grandfather Charles Giaque-Abraham JAQUES (b. 1797) and a Trub, Switzerland list for my 2-g-grandmother Anne FRANKHOUSER (b. 1802), if there is such a list. Dear Jennie: You need to visit SwissGen's "Swiss Surname Directory (SSD)," which provides both information about the surnames you are researching, but also 'registers your interest' for others to contact you and you can also see click on their names to send an e-mail to them. Ann - with most Windows fonts this will be ALT+0163 £ Windows includes a utility program "CharMap" found in the Accessories folder on the Start Menu. It shows which characters are found in a particular (selectable) font [not all fonts will have the same extended characters], and when you select a given character the ALT+ codes are shown in the lower right corner. One may also copy characters, then paste using the standard Windows Control-V shortcut. Hello: For those folks who are contemplating a research, or other, trip to Switzerland in the next year or two, consider that there is to be an Expo in 2002 in the area near Neuchatel. Well, actually in the region of Neuchatel. Four sites are planned, the others being Yverdon-les-Bains, Murten, and Bienne/Biel. All four sites are to be along the respective waterfronts. Information about the Expo can be obtained on-line at: <http://www.expo2001.ch/>. There isn't much at this site yet, but I feel sure that, as time grows closer, more information about exhibits, events, and other aspects of the Expo will show up. Swiss organizers originally had planned to have the Expo in 2001, but adequate financing was not available, so permission was obtained to delay it for a year. Yours, Hubert Paulson
