    3. Actually I am pretty sure there is something in von Moos, although I don't have a copy of the page. It may be under a sleightly different spelling, perhaps starting with an umlauted a instead of the first e. Try looking under Wattenwil and it should show up. Rick Saunders

    1. [SWITZ] Segessemann / Segessenmann data added from FNBS '89
    2. Dear Segessemann / Segessenmann researchers: I have added the 1989 FNBS data to SwissGen's Swiss Surname Directory for the surnames Segessemann and Segessenmann. Unfortunately, there were no listings in von Moos' Bibliography of Swiss Genealogies. I suppose you'll have to get going and write a Segessemann / Segessenmann family history / genealogy for Mario to include in future editions. ;-) You may obtain the additional data at: http://iseli.simplenet.com/ch-names/ best wishes, Dave Schmutz SSD admin.

    1. RE: [SWITZ] Segessemann
    2. Rick and Sharon: According to FNBS, 1989 edition, Segessemann only had citizenship in Wattenwil BE before 1800. There are other villages listed, but starting in 1908 in Thun BE and then 1920 in Oberhelfenschwil, then other towns in 1923, 1958, 1961. There is, however, a slightly different spelling - adding an extra "n" - Segessenmann. In FNBS, they are listed in Signau, BE from before 1800 (there is only this single listing - no others). best wishes, Dave -----Original Message----- From: Fredric Z. I believe there were a couple of other communities where Segessemann later had citizenship in the 1800s, but they had earlier had it at Wattenwil. If I recall correctly there was one other community at which Segessemann had citizenship before 1800 besides Wattenwil. I have Segessemann ancestry at Wattenwil, but lose the name after a 1786 marriage. You can see my Segessemann line at my site below. Rick Saunders http://pweb.netcom.com/~fzsaund/0.html

    2. Toni Turk
    3. Seeking information on any Joseph HALTER/HALSUR/HOLTZER/HOLZER - born abt 1803, who was married to an Alphia [Alphina]. Descent is through their daughter Magdalena, who was married 8 Jan 1856 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, OH, to Marcus WALCHER. The 1880 census gives her place of birth as Switzerland, which was the place of birth of her husband. Her marriage license application gives her maiden name as HOLTZER. Her death record [31 Oct 1887 - Independence, Cuyahoga, OH] gives her maiden name as HALSUR. On the 1880 census she is located on page 31 in Independence Twp. On page 30 of the same census is a Joseph HALTER, born Jan 1832 in Baden. It is felt that this Joseph may have been her brother. 1. [SWITZ] KNOBEL from Bern, emigrated 1882
    2. Terri Hauk
    3. I am researching the KNOBEL surname from Switzerland. I have very limited information but here's what I know: My great grandmother was Isabelle S. KNOBEL, born 1880 in Bern, Switzerland. Her father was John KNOBEL and she may have had a brother, Benjamin KNOBEL. This family emigrated from Switzerland in 1882 to Kentucky, probably Louisville, Jefferson County. John later owned land in other parts of KY and in Ohio. Isabelle and my g-grandfather, Thomas Alva MCDONALD, born 1875 in Meade Co., KY, were married in 1902 in Louisville. Thomas had returned as a disabled veteran of the Spanish-American War in Cuba and was either still in law school or just starting his law practice in Louisville when they were married. They had 2 children, Benjamin C. McDonald and Verena McDonald, both born in KY. They eventually moved to Evansville, Vanderburgh Co., IN and later retired to a farm in Elberfeld, Vanderburgh Co., IN. Isabelle died in 1951 in Elberfeld and Thomas died there in 1959. I don't have any information as to where in Switzerland this KNOBEL family may have originated or how or why they emigrated to the US. I don't have Isabelle's mother's given name or surname. I believe Verena is/was a popular Swiss name but also wonder if it could have been from Isabelle's mother's name? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Regards, Terri McDonald Hauk thauk@home.com

    3. Gustav, Gottfried, Daniel LECHNER went to the US from Wil, Zürich, Switzerland about 1869 and joined the army. They were declared missing by the court in Switzerland in 1912. I have possible death dates (1877, 1878/75, 1881). >From letters written to family Gustav was married to a Reine MOOR possibly in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, about 1872 and had a son and daughter (died as child). He divorced in about 1877. >From the same letters, Daniel married a Luisa LUTHI about 1874 and had a daughter. They lived in Phildelphia, Pensilvania, at that time. I am looking for the decendants of the three brothers. Also, since I have never done any research in the US, where do I go to to find birth, death and marriage information. Contact me privately, since this is not a research topic directly related to Switzerland. Felix Höhener

    1. [SWITZ] FREITAG - Elm in Glarus Canton
    2. Paula Murphy
    3. Is anyone researching the Freitag family from Elm in Glarus? I have recently discovered that my great-grandmother, Anna Maria Freitag, was born on 26 October 1862 in Elm. She was in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania by 1883 when she married Adam Laupert from Oberhausen, Germany. Someone was kind enough to check FTM's CD#356, "Germans to America 1875-1888" for me and I found one reference for Anna Freitag, age 20, who arrived in the US on October 12, 1882 from Switzerland listing her occupation as Dressmaker. According to this information, there were no other Freitag's on this ship. However, a seemingly very large family of Freitag's came from Switzerland on May 12, 1882 on the same ship. This family appears to be headed by Heinrich and Regula Freitag and included 9 children ranging in age from 5 to 22. Would a 20 year old female dressmaker travel alone to join her family? If you are researching this line or have any ideas for me, please let me know. Thank you, Paula Murphy
