    3. Thanks, Ruth, for the info. The only thing I was able to achieve was to send his messages immediately to the Trash Bin. 3. Ralph, where is home for you? Have you ever searched your roots? Your Pfister family hails most likely from TUGGEN on the east end of the lake of Zurich. I believe it's Canton St. Gallen. Else it's Canton Schwyz. That does not imply he was not emigrating to the States from canton Bern, only that he was citizen from Tuggen! o.k.? Christian Pf. could have had the same grandparents as my principal teacher in high school way back in Switz., long, long, long ago! I had good results once before when I did that.....I found Sebastian Wanderon listed as Sebastian Wanderer! No wonder I couldn't find him before that. Thanks again..... Marjorie Gallagher

Would you be kind enough to resend the site as I deleted it when I couldn't get it to work, thinking that it was somehow wrong. Oops. Since you had success, I see I was wrong. I'd love to see it. I simply could not resist your line about "knowing it all" as I've just started this quest and would like to find someone who does know more about accessing geneology info than I do. I'm trying to locate the parents of WILLHELM or william EMANUEL BACH. His 1st wife was Elizabeth possibly ALLEMAND and they had 2 children in BERN Elizabeth BACH born 1836, abt, and Lewis Bach b abt 1839. His 2nd wife was MARIA MAGDELIN RUFI b. abt 1826 in FRUITIGEN near BERN. I'm torn between sources for the birth of W. Emanuel BACH ( he seems to have used Emanuel more). LDS lists Emanuel married to Maria Magdelin Rufi, dying in OHIO in 1888( which matches my info and Bible) as having been born in Germany in 1836. Ancestry.com lists Bern 1803 for his birth. The 1st wife died, when exactly I do not know. Maria and Emanuel married in Ohio, Winesburg. Maria died in 1912 also in Ohio. They had Emanuel Jr., Eda Henryetta, Caroline, Peter, and a few other kids. Would you know how I can find out W.E. BAch's parents, PLEASE? The obvious family legend exits that we are descended from JS Bach; the boys of Maria and Emanuel did make claviers, I've been told. I would be very grateful for your help. Hilary [email protected]

    3. Hilary, here is the lost entry. Did you tell us where you live? It is always interesting to know where the call for help is coming from. You are not giving away your identity by telling us where you live! Good luck in your search! Walter in Vancouver ----- Original Message ----- From: "guy grenny" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, July 31, 2002 11:02 AM Subject: [SWITZ] Dietrich-Anker of Ins/BE Dear Melissa! Do you know that one of your Anker ancestors is Switzerland's most beloved painter? Albert ANKER b. 1 April 1831 in Ins/Anet, BE. ("Anet" is the french version of Ins, in case you stumble across it - since the village is in the bi-lingual region of Kt. Bern). Albert Anker died in 1910 at his house in Ins. Anker was born, grew up, lived and died in the same beautiful Bauernhaus (farmhouse) all his life - later raising his own family there. By clicking the following web you can visit Ins and his very home. He had his atelier in the attic room. You can visit the home by appt. - my bro. Felix and I touched the very brushes he had used. http://www.be.ch/cgi-bin/frameset.exe?http://www.be.ch/themen/links/ge meinden.html On this web go to "Gemeinden" (communities), click on "Ins". There is a brief history of the place, but in German alas (but for Anker I would study Greek!). So click on "Ortsplan" (place map). There you see numbered houses; Nr. 20 being the Ankerhaus. It is on Müntscherniergasse (notice the street name is a weird combination of Bernese Swissgerman dialect, frenchified. Typical of the region. On Albert Anker's 70th birthday, the Swiss Bundesrat ( Government) praised him as the quintessential painter of Swiss village life - the times, the people . As the beloved Swiss writer Jeremias Gotthelf described the lives and souls and conditions of the Swiss farmers of his days, so Albert Anker illustrated and preserved their stories through his paintings. To give a tiny glimpse of Anker's stalwart integrity - by necessity he accepted commissions from customers who wanted their portrait painted and right from the start put a nominal price of SFr. 100 (I think) as his flat fee. The more he painted the more famous he became - but he refused to raise his fee! It was a matter of principle with him. But his preferred subjects were the village children. He would pay schoolchildren to pose and they would hop on over from the old (still standing) village Schulhaus. Very precious. So much to tell and I've probably annoyed some listers - sorry. Would you believe I have an "Anker room" in my house - with my favorite art prints of his work ;-) There must be an Anker Association - but I don't know how to find it. You can find some links in the website. I have before me an Anker Book: crosscut of his bio. and many of his works. Albert Anker authors Sandor Kuthy and Hans A. There is also the possibility that whoever wrote up the original passenger manifest missed members of the family. This happened in my case when my grandfather, who was 2 years old, was not listed with the rest of the family on the passenger list. Paul C. Miller

    3. Sheri, I think there is a hint for his origin on the back of his marriage license, namely the word "Baron." In Swiss-German the name "Bern" sounds to English speakers like "Baron." So I think he was from the city or canton Bern. By the way, I've been looking at microfilms for Canton Solothurn. At the beginning of each item is a frame of information, including the name of the person who made the microfilm. "Alma Ryser" filmed about every one of those. I'm very grateful for her work. Judy > > On the back of his marriage license was written > " Dad Baron Swiss Rieser- Ryser" > I have lots of info on his life here, but the 23 years overseas are what I would like to know about now. There is no indication of where in Switzerland on his Dec of Intent, Naturalization Papers, Death Certificate, etc. > > Could someone help, offer suggestions, as to where to go next? Without a city or Canton, what approach should I try?
