    1. [SWITZ] births/baptisms
    2. The church records I've been studying in Guggisberg, Kanton Bern, *usually* give only baptismal dates, which people frequently mistake for birth dates although the record is called a "Taufrodel." But some church record-keepers do add the date of birth as well, and some even record the date of the parents' marriage and (apparently) the names of their parents! You never know until you look. Harold Henderson, [email protected] on the lookout for HENDERSON, MACRAE, DAVIDSON, JOHNSTONE (Scotland) ANDERSSON/BORING, SVENSSON, STENBERG, JOHANSDOTTER (Sweden); THRALL (New England), JAMES (Wales), FLINT, GEDNEY (Lincolnshire), SCHRIBER/SCHREIBER, JOSS, STAUDENMANN (Switzerland); SCHOLES, MILLS (Lancashire), MOZLEY (Nottinghamshire), VAN NATTA (New Netherlands), BOREN, COCHRAN, LINHART, BLACK (Pennsylvani a); BASSETT, COON, BLISS, HUMPHREY, BURDICK, CAMPBELL, CRANDALL, DENISON (New England); & more

    1. [SWITZ] Surname: BALDINGER
    2. <PRE>I am looking for information about Jacob & Henry BALDINGER born in Switzerland in 1824 & 1818, respectively. This is according to the 1860 Census of Crawford County, Ohio. They immigrated to America between 1852 & 1854 from Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. I believe the were born in Canton Aargau of Switzerland. Can anyone help me located documentation, living descendants researching them or living descendants in Switzerland? Thank you. Dorene Baldinger-Morris

    1. [SWITZ] Re: SWITZERLAND-D Digest V02 #220
    2. Claire, I don't know if anyone has helped you with this question yet. I had a somewhat similar experience where I had two birthdates for my ggrandfather. My Swiss cousin informed me that the first was the real birthdate, and the second was like a baptism date. In fact, here is his explanation of my situation: "In several cases, you seem to have baptism dates instead of birth dates. The family records were established 1825/1826. Before, there were church records. The church did not record the births but the baptisms. That's why in earlier years, we often have baptism dates instead of birth dates. In most cases, it is not possible to find out the birth date." Hope this helps! Karen P.S. I've never posted a message to rootsweb. 1. [SWITZ] STREIFF and FERN
    2. Terry & Janet
    3. I am hoping that someone here can help me out. I am having a hard time locating information on a man named Peter Streiff from Schwanden, Glarus. I have contacted the Landesacrchiv in Glarus and the only Peter that they can find with the same birthdate as mine most likely isn't the Peter I'm looking for. The marriage date is also the same but the wifes name is no where near the one I have which is Fredericka FERN. The information also states that the first wife, Regula STREIFF died and he remarried in New Glarus, Wisconsin to a Magdalena KNOBEL. As far as all the sources of information I have on my Peter he never remarried or lived in Wisconisin Who else can I contact to find out if there is another Peter out there with the same birthdate? Also, does anyone know if there is a surname of FERN in the Glarus area. Landesarchivs tell me there are no FERN's in the area. Thank you for any help, Janet Strief

    3. Frederik Elich (or Eligh) said by baptism of his sun in 1786 that he was a soldier of the Swiss regiment of general Stockar de Neuform. He must be born about 1746. His wife Barbara Hemmich is borned in Nameur about 1755. In the family Elich there is a story that the roots of the family are in the Alsace. Questions: - who has information about the name Elich or Eligh? - who knows the native place of Frederik? - who has information about the Swiss regiment of general Stockar de Neuform? - who has information about Barbara Hemmich? 1. Re: [SWITZ] Looking for birth certificate
    2. Re gggrandfather: 1) was he born in Canton Bern or City of Bern? If the former, what village? If the latter, what church parish in Bern City? 2) do you know the date of his passport, or the approximate date, closer than sometime in 1861 (which is better than we usually get)? With the information you already have provided, should be no problem getting the birth certificate. With the additional info I have requested, it'll be a walk in the park. 3. This is off the subject. Please forgive me, but I need to know how you discovered that these sisters were nuns? Family story has it that one of my great aunts became a nun, but I have no idea what order, and can only make an educated guess as to the date and locale. Is there a national archive in the Catholic church that would list those who joined any order? ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, September 27, 2002 11:37 PM Subject: [SWITZ] RE: Family Meyer from Berne > Hi Randy, > > I have a Christine Meyer who married into our family. 2. Hi Randy, I have a Christine Meyer who married into our family. She married Frank (Francis, I think) Joseph Biry. Haven't found their wedding date yet, but I do have the birth dates for two of their children. Their daughter Catherine Biry, was born 2-14-1844 in Berne, Switzerland. Sometime after her birth they moved to the states in 1844. I'm not sure where or when they arrived here, but they settled in Wisconsin for a while and then moved to Pontiac, MI. Their second daughter Mary Biry, was born in Pontiac, MI on 3-22-1848. They might have had other children that I haven't found out about yet. The information that I have on these two sisters is from the Catholic Church because they both became Nuns in Monroe, MI. I plan on writing for Catherine Biry's birth certificate and hope that there will be some more information that might help in my search. If I find out anything else about Christine Meyer, I'll be sure to let you know. I'd love to find out who her parents were. Good luck in your search. Barbara Sepos

Did Swiss citizens from ALL Kantons have to apply to Bern (the seat of Swiss Government from what date?) for a passport??? 3. If so, are All such passport applications now stored in the Bern Archives and accessible for research? Thanks!
