I've just acquired a family document from St. Imier, but it's written in French, and I wonder if someone could help me translate it. Try this: http://www.geocities.com/heartland/9711/chpostal-count.html This a list of every village that has a postal code, sorted both alphabetically and by postal code. I have used the latter to extract all villages in Jura, which is where my ancestors come from.
Hi list, I am a Swiss descendent, but have recently found that my ancestors were under the Bishop of Constance and my further research will have to go to Karlsruhe, Germany. I have copies of a book "Repertorium schweizergeschichtlicher Quellen im Generallandesarchive Karlsruhe. and page numbers. My question. What am I likely to find from this reference and has anyone else done any research at Karlsruhe? Thanks for any help. Gloria Engweiler Wood The name I am researching is Engweiler, but any one researching Egloff, Engweiler, or Meyer from Canton Thurgau might also have an interest in this.
You can also find it on Ebay many times -- that is where I found mine -- vintage 1907 for about $10-12 if you are patient. <A HREF="http://www.swisstopo.ch/en/maps/fk/weg.htm">Click here: Swisstopo: Swiss Path</A> This will get you to plenty of 1:25,000 maps, but I wouldn't go that way. Cheaper, and the way I'd go, is to find all the villages you can with your Michelin 217, then post a query to the list with the rest of the villages. People will find them for you, and most will scan them over to you. Can't beat the price. Probably the most cost-effective way would be to purchase a used "Baedeker's Switzerland" (or France, or Germany, or Italy, or England, or Spain). It shows topography, hiking paths between villages, and for the smaller villages it even shows the individual houses. Every "Baedeker's" has a very comprehensive place-name index. So, you ask, what is a "Baedeker's?" Karl Baedeker put out a guide book almost every year from 1878 to 1926. They are each one remarkable in their own right. Don't fall for the modern version of a "Baedeker's." There is no comparison beyond the name. You should be able to pick one up for Switzerland (or any other European country of your choice) for about forty bucks. When I was in Switzerland, I purchased some wonderful maps published by the Bundesamt für (fuer) Landestopographie. Some are as detailed as 1:25000 and even show individual farms. I came across a web site that sells these, but I have not yet purchased anything from them. http://www.omnimap.com/catalog/int/swittopo.htm#p6 Judy Fee > As long as we're on the subject of Swiss geography, can anyone > suggest a source of extreme close-up maps of Switzerland, or > rather portions thereof? As long as we're on the subject of Swiss geography, can anyone suggest a source of extreme close-up maps of Switzerland, or rather portions thereof? Either on line or off line would be good. I'm trying to decipher baptismal records and I suspect that the 1:200,000 Michelin map #217 I have does not include all the villages and hamlets that are probably being mentioned. (And my chances of deciphering the handwriting are poor without some idea of what that squiggle is "supposed to be"!) Thanks in advance to those who reply; your expertise is much appreciated. The Canton of Aargau in its present-day boundaries came into existence through the Act of Mediation issued by Napoleon in early 1803. It combined the former Berner Aargau (the part until 1798 administered by Berne), the Fricktal (formerly Austrian territory) as well as Baden and Freiamt (until 1798 under joint administration by several cantons). When your Michael Huber was at one occasion listed as having been born in the Canton of Berne there is a high likelhood that we are talking about the Berner (Bernese) Aargau. From there on you could probably safely concentrate your search on communities in this part of the present-day Canton, mainly Mülligen / Oberkulm / Reinach AG / Unterkulm / Windisch. Peter W. Hi I'm a bit familiar with the history of Canton Aargau as I grew up in that region. The Canton was founded in 1803 only, under the Napoleonic government. Before that the territory of the Canton belonged to various states and Cantons, depending on the respective region, which were the Canton Bern (south-western part of the today's Aargau) the Habsburg monarchy (north-western part) the United Dominions (south-eastern part, thence governed by the Central Cantons) the County of Baden (which was Baden Switzerland, north-eastern part). Depending on the exact location of birth of you ancestor, it might have been in the Canton Bern, or any of the above. You are right, HUBER is among the top five (if not top three) family names within the German speaking part of Switzerland. Let me use the occasion to point especially newcomers on Switzerland-L to the SwissGen pages, where you'll find first answers to many of your questions: SwissGen now consists of allmost 500 pages - so you may not find your way around at first easily. A good start will in such cases be the full text search feature on http://swiss.genealogy.net/search-m.htm For people familiar with SwissGen the announcements of new pages may be of interest: http://swiss.genealogy.net/news-m.htm where you can also suscribe te "swissgen-news", to be informed by e-mail about new pages. As described on this page, with some subscriptions problems with the confirmation have been expereinced (exclusively aol customers so far): should this happen, just send me an e-mail (as described). I hope many readers find SwissGen useful - if you do, you should be aware that this free service is provided with the help of some 30 volunteers worldwide. Would anyone be able to help me with the following: from the years 1785 to about 1812, did the Canton of Aargau exist or was it part of the Canton of Bern? I have been told that my G-g- Grandfather Michael Huber was born in the Canton of Aargau in 1788 but on one occasion someone listed it as Bern. At any rate, I have all but given up for finding any info about him without narrowing the area from which he came. To complicate things,I have been told that the name Huber is one of the most common names in Switzerland. I would appreciate and info in reference to the Cantons. Thank you
It has been my experience that the earlier the record is, the more likely it will be that the date is that of the baptism/christening. As a rule in church records if I see only a single date recorded I assume it is that of the baptism/christening unless the record explicitly states it is for the birth. I have also observed in the instances where one minister has chosen to record both dates, they tend to be a fairly consistent distance apart for a given town but may be different from other towns even short distances away. I would guess another instance of the Swiss practice of local traditions :-) It is also interesting that in more recent times (since about 1830 in Graubunden) when there was essentially uniform recording of both birth and baptism/christening, these intervals are similar to the more scattered data recorded earlier in the church books. One general exception involves children whose condition indicated that they might not survive long. There one does see them being baptised/christened on the date of birth. This may be noted in the church book that the baptism/christening took place at home. Do not let the differences in names worry you. The family probably called the persons by their middle names, the first name usually being a saints name, or Uncle Johann's name who they were named after. The Swiss also used nicknames a lot, so if you know them by that name, perhaps someone on the list can help you "translate". If your birthdates match, then you are probably close. Just remembering that often the dates given in the church registers are for christening dates. If no birthdate is given also, then you can probably guess that the child was born a month earlier. From my searches, it seems to have been the custom not to christen or baptize until the baby was a month old. As for your last name searches, be sure to check all possible spellings; STREEF, STRIEF, etc. I am constantly finding my ancestors names spelled so many different ways here in the US. Hope this helps. "rwalker" Researching SPERISEN, also spelled Speirsen, Spereisen, Spareson, Spercien
Have located two passenger ship records that may be of interest. If you write to me at [email protected] I will forward the information on to you. Jeanine
Jerry, I am actually looking for information on Peter STREIFF born 20 Feb 1831/2 married Freiderica Fern b. 1834. They were married 22 Mar 1854 and sailed to America soon afterward. All of this information is from family, most are dead now. We cannot locate any death certificates from either Peter or Freiderica or incidentally on a few other Streiff men and their wives in Dubuque County, Iowa. That didn't help much I've asked the Landesarchiv for information on Peter's brothers but they only found one out of the 4 he had. The one they found had a different first name from what I have, but the birth, marriage date and wife were the same. However, the parents names are not what I have been told they should be, and the Peter they have listed as a brother to this man is the one who went to New Glarus in Wisconsin. Right now I have a letter to the Passport office in Switzerland hoping they will have something on my Peter. I also am checking the passenger lists with the National Archives in the U.S. Does anyone have a suggestion on where to try next?? I'm getting frustrated, I have been digging for info on this man for years. I have found that some of the family sources haven't been over reliable, which I'm sure most of you have run into yourselves. I am beginning to wonder if this man was illegitimately born and that is why he is not showing anywhere or he may "borrowed" someone else's identity. Maybe I watch too many movies... Thank you for any help, Janet ----- Original Message ----- From: Jerry To: [email protected] Sent: Friday, October 04, 2002 11:25 PM Subject: [SWITZ] STREIFF & FERN Hello Janet, I have a Peter STREIFF from Glarus, but he was born in 1550 in Diesbach in the canton. You did not mentioned the birthdate of your Peter, but I guess it was in the 1800's? I also check for the surname FERN in my database, but did not have any entries. I'm not sure what you can do now, but to go back to the your records or sources and recheck the info to see if there was a copy mistake or a mix up? I am researching the JENNY's from Schwanden and have found many JENNY's with the same forename, same birthyear but they were cousins which makes it hard to separate the various lines. Hello Listers, I am still looking for my Swiss D(A")TTWYLER family. In the Biel Church Book VI, I find the first page is printed, titled 'Taufrodel 1809'. It shows the parents names and town names; Child name and birth date; Godparents and town names. The bottom of the page is titled 'Register'. It shows names?; name of child?; Pag.?; Number. I think that the Number is the entry # of the year of birth. I have scan it, can anybody tell me the whole page contents? Thank you, Alan Rossing, Monterey, California, USA
Try: http://www.directories.ch/cgi-bin/etv/etv?lang=de&d=ead I thought I had grabbed the correct URL, but obviously not...if that is still not the correct one, then try: http://www.directories.ch click on Deutsch (far right in the blue line)[if not the default already] As part of the blue line on the left side, Suchen & Finden (Search & Find) Go straight down to: E-Mail-Verzeichnis This brings up a webpage that has 3 fields to fill in and 1 drop-down menu. SwissGen has several other e-mail search engines listed, but I have not tried them recently. http://www.eye.ch/swissgen/contac-e.htm#direct Best wishes, Dave --- [email protected] wrote: > Hi Dave, > > Could you be alittle more specific on how to use the following > steps: > > 1 - go to http://www.directories.ch/cgi-bin/etv/etv > 2 - type the surname in the "Name, Firma oder Rubrik" field > 3 - Select "Schweiz" in the "Ort" pull down menu > > When I did step 1, it appears I was sent to a slightly different > webpage. > > tx.....gary.babler > [email protected] __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Data from Familiennamenbuch der Schweiz, concurs with your suggestion the Baldinger surname had origins in AG. In the following villages in canton Aargau, Baldinger had citizenship rights (where you will find their records): Baden Holderbank Lengnau Rekingen Zurzach >From which village were Jacob & Henry originally? Only more research can determine this. You will have to look at the church records in each village above to see if you can find them. http://www.eye.ch/swissgen/kibu/ Unfortunately, very few church records in AG have been microfilmed, so you will either have to make the trip to Switzerland and do the research yourself, or hire someone to do it. As far as living descendants and finding them. I would suggest using the on-line Swiss telephone directory: http://www.whitepages.ch and writing letters to them. Write in both English and the language of the area they live in. Another method would be to contact as many Baldinger in Switzerland using e-mail addresses: http://www.directories.ch/cgi-bin/etv/etv Type the surname in the "Name, Firma oder Rubrik" field. Select "Schweiz" in the "Ort" pull down menu. SwissGen has a wonderful write-up on it: http://www.eye.ch/swissgen/contac-e.htm Best wishes, Dave -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, October 04, 2002 3:35 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [SWITZ] Surname: BALDINGER I am looking for information about Jacob & Henry BALDINGER born in Switzerland in 1824 & 1818, respectively.
