I am interested in finding a copy of the book Das Frutig Buch. Can anyone help? I am researching STOLLER in Frutigen...Johannes, father of Rosina (she b. ab. 1804.) Interested in the history of the village and Napoleon's bodyguards from there? Family lore says Johannes was "French" (Stoller... French?) and a bodyguard for Napoleon. Thanks. 1. [SWITZ] age to be godparent
    2. Does anyone have any knowledge of how old a person normally had to be in order to serve as a godparent at a new baby's baptism? I'm working in Kanton Bern early 1800s at the moment, but would be interested in what people have seen at other places and times. Harold Harold Henderson, [email protected] on the lookout for HENDERSON, MACRAE, DAVIDSON, JOHNSTONE (Scotland) ANDERSSON/BORING, SVENSSON, STENBERG, JOHANSDOTTER (Sweden); THRALL (New England), JAMES (Wales), FLINT, GEDNEY (Lincolnshire), SCHRIBER/SCHREIBER, JOSS, STAUDENMANN (Switzerland); SCHOLES, MILLS (Lancashire), MOZLEY (Nottinghamshire), VAN NATTA (New Netherlands), BOREN, COCHRAN, LINHART, BLACK (Pennsylvani a); BASSETT, COON, BLISS, HUMPHREY, BURDICK, CAMPBELL, CRANDALL, DENISON (New England); & more

    2. Fredric Z. Saunders
    3. The youngest I have seen is where a man had his "brother" who was listed in the records as a "schoolboy" for one of the sponsors. He had just turned age 10. I've seen a number of records were the sponsor's identity is certain from a stated relationship in the baptismal record, that the sponsor was in the 14-16 age range (usually a sibling, or nephew/niece of one of the parents). These are all Canton Bern, in the time period 1750-early 1800s. Rick Saunders

I know the > second document is a marriage certificate; what is the first one? It seems > to be a birth certificate. > > Hello Christi: This is the gist of the two documents. Some of the words seem to be misspellings, and perhaps someone else on the list can fill in the blanks: Swiss Confederation, Canton Bern, Switzerland, Department of St. Imier Extract from the birth registry: On April ?, 1885, at 7:30 in the morning, Arnold Ariste Borner was born in St. Imier at Rue du Stand (street name), legitimate son of Arnold Borner, profession ?, from Rickenbach (Solothurn), living in St Imier; and Anna Suzanna, born Schild, from Brienzwyler (Bern). The document is dated April 9, 1885 (which may also be the date of birth, above) followed by the signature of the civil official. The chancellor's office of Canton Bern attests to the validity of the seal and the signature of the prefect (chief administrator). The second document: French Evangelical Church of New York: I, the undersigned, declare that on April 21, 1906, in the French Evangelical Church in New York, I celebrated the marriage of Mr. Ariste Arnold Borner, age 21, born in St. Imier, Switzerland, and Miss Julia Sophie Domers, born Besson, born in Valleyres-sous-Mance (Vaud) Switzerland. This marriage was registered in the city hall (Board of Health of Manhattan Borough) in the city of New York; Henri L. Grandlienard, pastor of the French Evangelical Church of New York. Hope this helps. Paul C. Miller

Let me use the occasion to point especially newcomers on Switzerland-L to the SwissGen pages, where you'll find first answers to many of your questions: SwissGen now consists of allmost 500 pages - so you may not find your way around at first easily. A good start will in such cases be the full text search feature on http://swiss.genealogy.net/search-m.htm For people familiar with SwissGen the announcements of new pages may be of interest: http://swiss.genealogy.net/news-m.htm where you can also suscribe te "swissgen-news", to be informed by e-mail about new pages. As described on this page, with some subscriptions problems with the confirmation have been expereinced (exclusively aol customers so far): should this happen, just send me an e-mail (as described). I hope many readers find SwissGen useful - if you do, you should be aware that this free service is provided with the help of some 30 volunteers worldwide. 1. Re: [SWITZ] Karlsruhe, Germany research
    2. Paul Rands
    3. In January 2002, I spent a week in the Kraichgau, a region just east of Karlsruhe. I had details of my wife's ancestors in the towns of Gondelsheim, Menzingen and Weingarten back to about 1695 but the line disappeared at that point. I visited local historians and connected with some who maintained that many of the people came to this region from Switzerland. Much of this part of Germany had been depopulated in the 1600's due to war, famine and plague. The local aristocratic families begged anyone to occupy the land and many came from Switzerland. I started to search in Switzerland and I have found exact matches for some of my lines where the names of parents and children and birthdates match up. This has allowed me to push back another two or three generations. I still have several lines to search. I can send you a summary of my trip to Germany and who I met with. I didn't find much at the Landesarchiv in Karlsruhe, but I was very impressed with the extensive nature of its collection. If you know the town names of where your people landed in Germany, you will no doubt be able to find lots of information using the LDS Family History Center near you to get the microfilm.
