I have found that www.multimap.com can find almost any tiny little village in Switzerland and then you can play with it until you can connect it to another town or village more easily found. A google search often comes up with pictures and putting the name of the town in this format for a web address often yields good results, generally NOT in English - www.townname.ch. My great grandfather Jacob Bopp was from the Canton of AARGAU according to his papers he filled out to become a citizen of the United States. He was probably born in 1821, immigrated to St. Louis, MO. thru the port of New Orleans, La. on June 21, 1842. The ship Woodside sailed from the port of LaHavre. France. On the passenger list he is listed as Jacque Bopp age 21 from Switzerland, an occupation was not given. He was a gardner. In St. Louis we called them truck gardners as they grew the fruits and vegetables and then went door to door selling their items. I do not know his parents names or place of birth or exact birth date. I have many records and his exact birth date is never given, just an age. I felt he probably served in the Swiss Army before he left. My grandma (his daughter) when asked by me, probably during the 2nd World War what nationality we were, she said "French, Dutch, Swiss and German". I know her father was Swiss, and her Mother and husband were born in Germany. But the French and Dutch I have never figured out. Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Hi Robert. Ooops! Different system in Switzerland. You will not be able to get any Swiss plate unless you do it illegaly! The plates belong to the State (i.e. Canton). Whenever you unregister any vehicle the plate h a s to go back to the Canton. If not you are going to continue to pay your car tax. I have just discovered from the 1881 UK census that my ancestor (paternal gggrandfather) Ernest Richelman, a stone mason, was born in Switzerland in 1849, although married and living at 6 Brigg Street,Middlesex in 1881. You will need to provide the father's full name, his hometown (just say near Worb), approx date of passport application (1848-18 52). John - Since Ledrich does not appear in either "Familiennamenbuch der Schweiz (FNBS ' 89)" or in von Moos' "Bibliography of Swiss Genealogies," I would have to agree with your and the LDS' implied conclusion that it is the Americanization of the Swiss surname Läderach/ Laederach. A. LÄDERACH. Läderach is an ancient Swiss family name found mainly in Canton Bern. Citizenship for surname Läderach is first recorded in Switzerland prior to the year 1800 in the following Bern locales: Konolfingen, Niederwichtrach, Rubigen, Vechigen, and Worb. Läderich families spread out from Worb to establish citizenship in other parts of Switzerland after the year 1900. B. LAEDERACH. It appears from FNBS ' 89 (p. 1057) that some emigration occurred from Canton Bern into Canton Neuchâtel in the 1900's. Thereafter the name Läderach was changed to Laederich in this French-speaking Canton.The French language does not have an umlaut (ä). The name is found in only two villages in Canton Neuchâtel: Boudry and Neuchâtel. C. Looking for more information on family. CALUORI, JÖRG, & THEUS originated in Domat/Ems, Graubunden. I have Georg Peter CALUORI b:about 1770 married to Marie Elisabeth JÖRG. Georg and Marie had Johann Peter CALUORI b:1804 married to Maria Anna Elisabeth Dorothea THEUS. They had Laurenz CALUORI b:1828 who migrated to Altdorf, Uri and married Anna Marie ZWYSSIG. Prior to Georg, I have family notes that Lorenzo Casa Luori was Italian nobleman who settled in Graubunden.
