    3. If you have the film number, go to you local FHC with the film # & ask them to fill out the look up form for you that you send to SLC with the specific information you want looked up. I know SL will do a look up on a book, I'm NOT sure they will do it on an uncirculated film, but it's worth a try. How > could I go about learning this information? I do not speak or read German. > Hello Russell: Without knowing the town in Canton Zurich where the family lived, this might be a difficult search. However, there are some possible leads at the LDS site. Although the Dachsen records have not been filmed, there are some Rubli entries for that town, and the source info might help you. Also, there are several earlier Caspar Rubli entries for the town of Uhwiesen in Zurich. Again, I do not believe these records have been filmed, but you could check the source data stated in the entries. Uhwiesen is fairly close to Dachsen, to the west. You also mentioned Winterthur. Those records have been filmed by LDS. If Barbara was born or married there, but her family was from a different town, her home town name should be mentioned in the records. You don't have to be knowledgeable in German to extract the important data from these records, and it is usually fairly easy, especially in these later records, to identify names, towns, and dates. There might be someone at your local FHC who can help if you get stuck. The Swiss also have a record called a Burgerrodel, which is a listing of citizens of a town. I don't know if copies are also maintained at the Canton level, but this might also be a source, and perhaps a more knowledgeable person on the list could give you more information about the Burgerrodel. Hope this helps a little. Paul C. Miller

    1. [SWITZ] Re: H. Darm
    2. Jacob's mother came from Hesse-Darm (Darmstadt) in Germany, not too far north of the Swiss border.  Before Germany became a unified country the different kingdoms or duchies or other regions were often reported by Americans and treated by US enumerators as separate countries, so you will often find something like this given as a birthplace instead of the generic term "Germany". At least it helps narrow down the area to search for the next step in your pedigree. Ardis >>>>    My ggrandfather, Jacob Haney (Hany) was born in Switzerland. 1. [SWITZ] Rubli family information
    2. Russell Buster
    3. My maternal great grandfather Caspar Rubli lived in canton Zurich in the middle 1860s. He married a lady named Marie Nohl, and they had five children. At least two of the children claimed in later life that the town of Dachsen was their home. One of the children named Barbara claimed a birth date of July 22, 1866, and named Winterthur as her last residence before emigrating to the United states. The names of the other four children were Caspar, Elsie, Marie, and Salome who emigrated to the United States with her sister Barbara in the year 1881. I would like to learn the birthplaces and birthdates of the rest of the children, the birthplaces and birthdates of their father and mother, and the place and date of their marriage. How could I go about learning this information? I do not speak or read German. Thanks for any help anyone can offer, Russell Buster

    1. Re: [SWITZ] CENSUS
    2. The first "city" census was taken in 1764 in the city of Bern. At the direction of Napoleon, a general census of Canton Bern was taken in 1798. (This is now available from Picton Press in a 3-volume set.) The first federal census was taken during April 1836 thru February 1838 and was noteworthy for being incomplete. In 1841 a more accurate census was taken. In 1850 the census took into account only those members of the population with rights of residence and not the population actually present at the date of the the census. In 1860 the census information was more complete and it was improved in 1870 and 1880. Censuses have continued every ten years since 1860. Copies can be obtained from both state and city archives.
