    1. RE: Michael & Thomas Sweet of St. Lawrence Co., NY
    2. Cyndi Sweet
    3. Hi Paul, The Michael & Cynthia Sweet family is a family I've been trying to tie into other St. Lawrence Co. Sweets for several years. I can't answer your question about their parentage or verify a relationship between Michael and Thomas, but will throw out a few thoughts in case it will help. Cynthia filed a pension claim in June 1867 after her son Zenas Sweet's death. Have you ordered a copy of that pension file? If you're trying to track down descendants of the Michael/Cynthia family, I believe I've traced the two youngest children's lines down to 1900-1920 (Mandana and Lyman) through census records. I can send you that information if it will be helpful. There is another Sweet family in Potsdam that may or may not tie in. That is the family of N. Sweet and his wife Damarias. "N" died after 1847 and by 1850; his wife Damaris was b. ca. 1803 Connecticut and d. after 14 November 1857 when she made her will. They had three children that I know of, Julia Maria who m. before 14 November 1857 Asahel E. Fuller; Emily D.; and Jane Elizabeth Sweet. Upon her mother's death, Charles C. Eastman was appointed Jane Elizabeth's guardian. This family is found at Potsdam as follows: Census Information 1840 Potsdam Village, St. Lawrence Co., NY, p. 214. N. Sweet 1850 Potsdam, St. Lawrence Co., NY, p. 5. Damarias Sweet There are several other Sweet families in St. Lawrence County as well. Did you notice that in 1880 there are two Sweets living side by side in Farmer Twp., Defiance Co., OH (p. 219 D). Gilbert Sweet, 32, indicates his father was b. NY, mb NY; Henry Sweet, 45, indicates his father was b. VT, mb NY. From "Commemorative Biographical Record of Northwestern Ohio", p. 192-196, paraphrasing, Fanny Sweet, daughter of Thomas J. Sweet and Ormanda Bowker Sweet. Fanny was born 24 June 1835 St. Lawrence Co., NY. She m1 Emanual Wolford who died in Farmer Twp., Defiance Co., OH in 1872 - you'll find them in the census there easily. They had four children. Fanny m2 William Price and they are found in the same location in 1880 - along with Elvira B. Crocker, 44, step sister-in-law, b. NY, and Fanny's children Carrie and Ida Wolford. The Bowkers seem to have been in St. Lawrence Co. for quite some time: There are seven Bowkers listed in the 1840 census index for St. Lawrence Co., New York. There are three Bowkers listed in the 1830 census index for St. Lawrence Co., New York. There are four Bowkers listed in the 1820 census index for St. Lawrence Co., New York. There is only Thomas Bowker in the 1810 index for St. Lawrence Co. (Potsdam). I hope this doesn't add to the confusion - my intention is to put out more puzzle pieces that may be of help. I am seeking information regarding Michael and Thomas J. Sweet, whom I believe to be brothers. The first census record I have found for them is from 1840 when they were living next door to each other in Lisbon, St. Lawrence, NY. Ten years later, Michael Sweet was living in Potsdam, St. Lawrence, NY, while Thomas J. Sweet had moved to Farmer, Defiance, OH. Michael later moved to Polkton, Ottawa, MI, where he died sometime after the 1860 census. His wife, Cynthia (Fisk) Sweet died in 1867, at which time she was listed as a widow. Meanwhile, Thomas J. Sweet remained in Defiance, OH, until his death in 1889. I would like to identify, if possible, the parents of Michael and Thomas J. Sweet. The census records do not agree as to the birthplace of Michael -- he was born c. 1815 in either NY or VT. However, all of the census records indicate that Thomas J. Sweet was born in Vermont. His tombstone indicates that he was born there about January 30, 1806. I could not find Thomas J. Sweet in the 1880 census, which could have given me some information as to the birthplaces of his parents. I have encouraged a descendent of Michael Sweet to participate in the DNA study, but I am not sure whether or not he will do so. However, I would like to know if we can connect these two men to any known Sweet families. Thanks!!!
