Fellow Sweet researchers, I have a lot of early (John Sweet b. 1520) Sweet information that I can assist a lot of you with. This information will also contain Westcott, Carpenter & Matteson research if anyone is connected to them as well. If you've come all the way through to the Dailey's and here to Ohio, happy to assist there as well. I cannot take credit for copying all of this information. My wonderful cousin did the leg work! Thank you Carol! You're the greatest! If it weren't for people like her, my research would have taken me a thousand lifetimes! Please be patient with your requests, I have 3 young children, a husband, full time job, & animals! It may take me a while. Weekends and evenings are best for requests. Michelle The documentation I have is as follows: -The Name Sweet It's Origin And Evolution -Old Traine The Historic Ol Manor House Of Modbury -The Sweet Pioneeers of America -John Sweet 1st and 2nd generations -Captain Henry Sweet 3rd generation -Rhode Island Court Records 1647-1662 vol 1 & vol 2 1662-1670 -Gleanings from Newport Court Files 1659-1783 -The Book with clasps and general records -Genealogical History of the Sweet Family in America 1630-1930 by James Sylvester Perry Sweet
Michelle: Many, many thanks for your kind offer -- I really appreciate it and any help you can give me. Family lore has it that our Sweet line is descended from the John Sweet who landed in Salem, Mass. in 1633 (at Sweet's Cove there) from Wales or elsewhere in England. I have hit the proverbial "brick wall" after tracing our line back from family Bible notations to a James Sweet. who was apparently born on April 1, 1758 in Rhode Island and married a lady named Sarah (last name possibly Green) who appears to have been born on Sept. 6, 1760. They had a son, also named James, who was born May 19, 1791 and on Aug. 16, 1820 married Charlotte Reynolds who was born on Aug. 5 or 13, 1802. The location in Rhode Island where these events occured seems to have been North Kingston. What I have been unable to locate in spite of searching Mormon Church microfilms of the extant birth records for that area -- which were partially destroyed in a fire -- are the names and dates of the father and grandfather of the James born in 1758. I shall be most grateful for any assistance you can give me in my quest, As an aside, can you tell me where you found the James Sylvester Perry Sweet "book" and whether it was in mimeograph form or actually had been printed? Other sources have indicated that he died before completing and actually printing this book, and that his family made mimeographed copies and sent them to several libraries. Again, many thanks for your offer and I look forward to hearing from you whenever you have the time - I wonder how you have any with your family, animals and job to keep you busy!!!!. /s/ Joseph Sweet ----- Original Message ----- From: "michelle" <michelleadailey@wowway.com> To: <SWEET-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 20, 2004 11:04 PM Subject: Sweet Records > Fellow Sweet researchers, > > I have a lot of early (John Sweet b. 1520) Sweet information that I can assist a lot of you with. Being a Sweet yourself, you can compare your Y DNA to that of other Sweets and discover which ones you are related to. We now have five different groups of Sweets identified from their different DNA patterns, and one of them appears to be the group of descendants of the immigrant John Sweet of Salem, while another appears to be the group of descendants of John Sweet/Swett of Newbury.
