Cathy -- I can't find my own Sweet ancestors, so have started a data base (a *very* long term project) and hope that I'll eventually learn something through the process of elimination. In the meantime, I may be able to shed a little light on your Susanna Sweet b. abt 1781 CT. At the least, I'm hoping that this will give you some ideas to continue your search. On the 1820 census of Ashtabula, Ashtabula Co., Ohio there are the Sweets LISTED BELOW. (NOTE: There are many other Sweets in Ashtabula Co. .. in other townships, but I don't have data on them.) When the birth dates are shown as "abt 17xx" it means that I also found that individual on 1850 or later census records so have a better guessimate on the date of birth, and proximitiy of families on the census records resulted in my *guesses* about relationships. Pely b. 1775 or before Pely Jr. b. abt 1796 Lewis b. 1775-1794 Isaac b. abt 1779 and Eli Holcomb b. abt 1782 Together with some Ashtabula Marriage records from the US Gen Web site, here is my *guess* as to a family structure: (Generation) 1 :Unknown Father Sweet 2. Peleg Sweet (b. 1775 or before) 3. Lewis W. Sweet (b. 1775-1794) m. Betsey Woodbury Jan 1811 3. Peleg Sweet, Jr. (b. abt 1796-OH) m. Hannah Stevens Mar 1819 2. Isaac Sweet (b. abt 1779 - CT) 3. Willard H. Sweet (b. abt 1800 CT) m. Susanna Woodbury Feb 1819 3. Augustus Sweet (b. abt 1814 OH) 2. Susanna Sweet (b. abt 1781 CT) m. Eli Holcomb (b. abt 1782 CT) (It is possible that Susanna & Eli were married in CT -- based on their ages, they probably married about 1800-1810.) 3. Heber Holcomb b. abt 1839 OH) 3. Eli Holcomb Jr. b. abt 1843 OH) Now, it is also certainly *possible* that Peleg Sweet (b. 1775 or before) is actually the Generation 1 father. Good luck in your search! My Susan was married to Eli Holcomb, but she doesn't show up on census after 1850 - presumably she died. It looks like her birth would be around 1781. Also living in Ashtabula at the time were Peleg, Isaac, Lewis, Willard and Fredus; might one of these be her family? - Thank You. > > Cathy > ccwitt@comcast.net > > > ==== SWEET Mailing List ==== > List problems? Thank you so much! I believe the information you've sent is my family, based on some other info I've received, the pieces are all fitting together! It looks like Peleg is Susanna's father and that she is one of 12 children from Peleg and Mary Wilkinson. I will send for birth/vitals from Connecticut to confirm this and her birth date, but it looks like a match. This list service has been great! I hope you enjoy the same success as I've had. If I can share anything I have as I go along let me know who your Sweets' are.
