Sweet, b. 17 Jan 1802 son of Samuel Thomas Sweet and Sarah Babcock. Ira married Sarah Hadsell in 1819 in Rennselaer County, N. Y. Family left Rennselaer Cty. in 1837 moving first to Allegehany Cty, N. Y. and a year later (1838) to Pike County, IL. Ira settled on Section 28, Hadley Township, Pike Cty, IL. where he died in 1844. His wife Sarah also died in 1844, two days after her husband's death. This couple is known to have had eight children of whom seven have been identified: daughters Anne, Barbara and Sylvania; and sons Rennselaer A., Nathan L., Ira A. (Jr.) and Thomas A. The eight child, whether male or female, has been elusive. Daughters: Twins Anne and Barbara were born in 1822/23 and were married the same day (10 Dec 1838) to Daniel W. Gray and George Mallaskey respectively. Daughter Sylvania was married to Nathaniel Smith (date and place of marriage unknown). Sylvania and her husband are believed to have lived most of their lives in Pike County, IL. and raised eight children. Sons: Nathan L. was born in 1824 in N.Y. and married a widow, Amanda nee Tolbert Dawson on 30 Nov 1844 in Pike County, IL. They had six children. Nathan moved his family to Tarrant County, Texas about 1858. Rensselaer/Rensellar was born 22 Feb 1827 in N.Y. and married Rebecca Hull on 19 Aug 1848 in Pike County, Il. They had five children. Rennselaer lived most of his adult life in Pike County, IL. Ira A. is believed to have been born in 1830 in N.Y. although some researchers believe his year of birth to be 1820. Secondary source documentation I found ("History of Pike County, Illinois", Chas C. Chapman & Co. Chicago, May 1880) states that Ira was the fifth of eight children of Ira Sweet and Sarah Hadsell. Accordingly, I have accepted the 1830 date of his birth. Ira was married to Martha Hewitt on 30 Oct 1856 in Pike County, IL. This couple had no natural children although they are believed to have adopted a son. Except for a two year stint in California (1849-1850), Ira is believed to have lived most of his life in Pike County, IL. Thomas A(ndrew)'s date and place of birth is unknown. He married Catherine Burdick on 7 March 1851 in Pike County, IL. and like his brother Nathan, moved to Tarrant County, Texas prior to the start of the Civil War. Thomas and Catherine are known to have had at least one child, John M. Sweet born 2 June 1869. Seeking assistance in identifying the eighth and unknown child of Ira A. Sweet and Sarah Hadsell. I believe it may have been my ancestor, Samuel O. Sweet who was born somewhere in New York in 1825 and was married on 11 Oct 1849 in Pike County, IL. to Amanda Melzinee Gibson. Samuel and Amanda appear on the 1850 census for Pike County living on a farm next to Nathan Sweet. As stated above, Nathan is believed to have moved to Texas in 1858. Samuel is known to have moved to Union Star, Dekalb County,Missouri in 1864 where he died in 1875.
