    1. Re: Oliver Sweet b 1746
    2. Greetings! As per my previous postings in the archives, the line of Oliver Sweet has been the focus of my personal research for quite a while. Therefore, I thought it appropriate for me to remind us of a few things that could be important. These are primarily in reference to the comments made by John Chandler. John wrote, "One son was apparently named Joseph, since the 1779 will of Jeremiah Fones of N.K. mentioned a Joseph Sweet, son of Oliver." ... I have only read the abstract of that will, but am interested in finding the entire text (i.e., if it is available). Any suggestions where I can get a copy? The Oliver Sweet who eventually settled in Scriba, Oswego, NY, did indeed have a son named Joseph born ca. 1774. They were both listed in the land records there as early as 1806. Joseph appeared in the 1820 and 1830 census records in Scriba, and was buried there in the Sweet-Worden Cemetary after his death in 1834. John again wrote, "I have no clues on the other children, other than the obvious guesses that they might be named after the immediate family, such as Oliver's parents Benjamin and Elizabeth or Susan's father George." Most of Oliver's children remain unidentified. However, based on the 1790 census when Oliver was living in Easton, Albany, NY, Oliver had a household of daughters in addition to his sons. I have found no records as to their names or spouses, although I suspect that a daughter Penelope married a Worden, the brother of Joseph W. Worden who appeared with Oliver in both Herkimer and Oswego Counties. It is also interesting that Joseph W. Worden had another brother named Edmond, perhaps suggesting that there was a close link between the families. We know from later census records that Oliver had two sons, James and John, who were born in the early 1790s. However, I do not know if they are children from Oliver's first or second marriage. John Sweet was still living in Scriba at the time of the 1855 census and identified his birthplace as Herkimer, NY, which is where Oliver and his family were living at the time of the 1800 census. Interestingly, James and John had several sons including one named Edmond, another Oliver. Susannah Rice's family is also interesting in that, if my memory serves me correctly, E.G. records indicate that her father George Rice died shortly after her birth. Those records also indicate that an Elizabeth Rice (Susannah's mother??) married Henry Gardner. It is also interesting that Benjamin Sweet (1779-1828) named two daughters Susannah, a son Henry, and another son (my gggrandfather) Joseph W. Sweet. John again wrote, "The fact that he was living in N.K. as of 1782 combined with the lack of any children recorded at E.G. suggests that he settled in N.K. soon after his marriage." I am not sure when Oliver settled in N.K., but he was still in E.G. at the time of the 1777 military census. He also appeared a few times in the E.G. town records during the mid 1770's, usually being reimbursed for his care of the indigent and elderly. Again, it is interesting that his name often appeared linked with Henry Gardner whom I had mentioned earlier. I also believe that Oliver witnessed the will for Samuel Gardner?? Finally, John wrote, "As we all know, the N.K. vital records were mostly destroyed by bank robbers, and so the lack of children recorded there is only to be expected." Thanks for the information, as that is something I had never heard. It does explain why there is a lack of vital records from N.K. Paul Sweet

The will can be found starting on page 59 of Book 11 of the North Kingstown council records. You can probably get a copy from the town itself or from the state archives. > The Oliver Sweet who eventually settled in Scriba, Oswego, > NY, did indeed have a son named Joseph born ca. 1774. I'd be interested in seeing a summary of the gravestone inscription(s). John Chandler

    3. Would like to have birth & place of birth for John & Lucy's Children: John SWEET (John, John, John, John, John, John "Isaac", Robert, John, Adrain, John) was born on 13 Jan 1762 in Exeter, Washington, Rhode Island. John married Lucy HAMMOND daughter of John Gardiner HAMMOND and Sarah. Source: John Sweet married Lucy Hammond, daughter of John Hammond. The marriage is not on record, but it can be deduced from Lucy's will of 1810 (proved 1811 at Exeter, RI). See RIGR v10 p216 for an abstract. Lucy Hammond Sweet who made a will as a widow dated 26 Dec 1810 and proved in Exeter 6 May 1811. (Ex 8:37?) It mentioned her children: It also mentioned her father-in-law, John Sweet, and her own deceased father, John Hammond. ( His will was Ex 5:138--and in it he mentioned his wife, Sarah.) There was also confirmation in "Some North Kingston, South Kingstown, Exeter and Richmond, RI Marriages from the Probate Records 1692 to 1850" compiled by Alden G. Beaman, copyright 1975, that Lucy Sweet, daughter of John (of John) Sweet, did indeed marry a Dawley. John and Lucy had the following children: F i. Lucy SWEET was born in 1789. She died after 1870. M ii. Daniel SWEET. M iii. Gardner SWEET. F iv. Betsey SWEET. F v. Nancy SWEET. F vi. Sarah SWEET
