His 1801 marriage record says he was the son of Samuel and was of North Kingstown, but it doesn't say that Samuel was also of N.K. If he was, then he could be the Samuel who had a wife Ann and a number of children, of which the first two names cannot be read (remember, this was North Kingstown, where the vital records were half-destroyed by fire). There is no James on record in the extended family. Another possibility is a Samuel of East Greenwich who married Catherine Aylesworth of North Kingstown in 1781. However, the only child on record for that Samuel is a son Johnson Sweet born in 1782.
