Hi Carol -- If Harriet L. Sweet married Lewis Chamberlain, wouldn't the surnames of their children be Chamberlain? And how could Harriet b. 1833 have son Charles A. b. 1843?? Did you mean that they were siblings? I am interested in the Charles A. Sweet b. 1843 that you mention. I, too, have a Charles A. Sweet b. 1843 as listed below. Also, in my notes on Charles A. Sweet (see below) there is 1860 census info. on another Charles A. Sweet about the same age, b. in NY. (Please note that I have evidence on some of this info, but received some of the info. from another researcher.) The line of SWEETS discussed below were in VT, MI & OR. However, I believe them to be related to Sweets who were in OH 1820's - 1852 when they went to Oregon. Charles Abner Sweet b. 8 Dec 1834 in Springfield, Windsor Co., VT; d. 26 Oct 1900 in Gresham, Multnomah Co., Oregon. He was the son of William S. Sweet and Harriet Bisbee per other researcher. He m. (1st) Perlina Melvin on 9 Oct 1856 in Owosso, Shiawassee, Michigan; she died 22 Apr 1861 in Three Rivers, St. Joseph Co., MI. They had two children: ?Armeda? b. about 1857 (she may have died young) and Frank b. about 1860. He m. (2nd) Lodema Howey on 22 Oct 1862 in Union City, Branch Co., MI Their children: 1. W. M. Sweet (mentioned in obit of his father) 2. Harriet "Hattie" Lelah Sweet b. 15 Nov 1866 in Athens, Calhoun Co. MI, d. 19 Apr 1959 in Eugene, Lane Co., Oregon. She married Frank Thomas Wostell. 3. Agnes B. Sweet b. Oct 1868 in MI, d. LA, CA -- never married 4. Beulia Sweet b. 1873, d. 1874 5. Milo G. Sweet b. 19 Mar 1875 6. Morris M. Sweet (could this be same person as W.M. Sweet and the "W" was a misprint?) 7. Lula Lodema Sweet b. 28 Oct 1883 in Yamhill Co., OR 8. Guy Ira Sweet b. 10 Jul 1885 in Yamhill Co., OR If anyone has further info. on these children, please let me know. Below are my notes on the above Charles Abner Sweet. Note that anything in square [brackets] was difficult to read and is only "my best guess." O. SWEET; Services Held From the Baptist Church Last Sunday; Gresham, Oct. 30 -- The funeral services of C. A. Sweet were held from the Baptist Church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock under the auspices of the G.A.R. Post of Pleasant Home of which the deceased was a prominent member. As Mr. Sweet was an old settler, a large audience was present from the community at large. The floral offerings were large, the casket being covered. The interment was in the Gresham Cemetery, close by the church. Mr. Sweet leaves a wife and five children to mourn his loss. One daughter Miss Agnes B. Sweet, well known in Portland, is a trained nurse who was called to Manila last year and is still absent, not being able to be present. Mrs. Wostull, another daughter, is living in Alaska. The oldest son, W. M. Sweet, assistant Western Union Telephone Company in California arrived this morning, too late for the funeral. The other two children are living at home. Mr. Sweet came to this country 20 years ago, from Michigan, living at McMinnville several years, removing from there to Sandy and from there to this vicinity where he has lived five years. In Michigan he enlisted in light artillery and served the Rebellion five years and seven months. His death occurred Friday morning, October 26, at 11 o'clock, resulting from Bright's disease. If spared until January 8, Mr. Sweet would have been 61 years of age. He was a man highly respected and much thought of, and as an old pioneer his death is keenly felt. 1900 PROPERTY: Per an affidavit filed in March 1901 by Ruth A. Howey of Lake City, Missaukee, Michigan in support of Lodema (Howey) Sweet's request for pension after the death of Charles, she states that "I have been personally acquainted with Lodema Sweet and her late husband since 1860." In the first part of their married life, she often met and visited with them. Later on when they moved west, they corresponded and she visited with them in their home ruing the winter season of 1900. She state that they have five children living and that they have "160 acres of land also a house & lot in Gresham, Oregon. I should judge from what I know of the their property that it would produce an income of more than $65 per year."
