    1. George T. Sweet, born ca 1890s & IN Allegheny Co., PA ca 1910-20
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/HBRBAIB/1143 Message Board Post: I recently purchased a studio portrait of George T. Sweet at an antique shop in Valporaiso, IN. I enjoy buying lovely old pictures like these in antique shops (with names on the back and photographer’s locations on the front) and locating descendants/family members so that I can re-unite the pictures, for only my costs, with people who will treasure them The photograph was taken by a professional photographer: “The Ralph Mineart Studios, 241 Fifth Ave., Pittsburg & Bellevue. I have checked the 1910 Miracode for Ralph Mineart, and find that he is listed in Allegheny Co., in Bellevue, Pennsylvania. George is a handsome young man of about age 25, give or take a few years, and it is my estimate that this was taken in about 1920-25, based on the type of photo and coloring. Vern has dark hair and dark eyes. The picture is an original and is an oval of about 2” x 4”, mounted on an 8” x 10”” frame of light cardboard, as was typical during that time period. It is in very good condition. If George T. Sweet is in your family in about that time frame, please Email me directly at margerice@prodigy.net.

Maria Sweet Severance is my great grand mother. My father Harold Severance told me that Maria was a midwife and "healer". My father said she would go in the woods gathering roots and wild plants for her healing medicines. Unfortunately, he doesn't remember what they were. It seems though that the tradition of "healing" has continued from the early "bonesetters"

    3. I found this at ancestry.com A marker at his grave site honors his service under Gen. Schuyler during the Revolutionary War. According to a history of SOUTHWESTERN MINNESOTA, "he was the soldier placed to guard the body of Jane McCrea, the beautiful and accomplished daughter of an American loyalist, who was killed by an Indian escort, July 27, 1777." The same source adds that following the war "he participated in the insurrection in Mass. raised by Daniel Shay against the court, he sided with the Court He removed with his family to the Town of Triangle, Broome County, N.Y., prior to 1810. He later removed to Upper Lisle and is buried with his wife in the cemetery there. BIOGRAPHIES OF ELIJAH SWEET & ELISABETH WRIGHT, HIS WIFE Elijah Sweet was born November 29, 1748, most likely in Massachusetts. He married Elizabeth Wright, location unknown, probably about 1770. He was a soldier in Gen. Schuyler's Regiment during the Revolution. "History of Berkshire County" lists Elijah as a Revolutionary soldier from the town of Becket. After the war, he took part in Shay's Rebellion, on the side of the government. In December of 1789, two Stockbridge people tried to sue Elijah, but he had moved to New Caanan, New York, so they seized some of his land in Massachusetts. Elijah and his family were living in Rensselaerville, Albany County, in 1792. Then they moved further west to Otsego County for a time. They also lived on the "Great Brook" in Chenango County, New York, afterward called the Ambler settlement, when that region was a dense wilderness. Still moving west, they settled in Triangle, Broome County, New York. Elijah and Elisabeth had seven children. Elijah died on Feb. 26, 1838, in Triangle. His wife Elisabeth was born in 1751, according to her grave marker, and died in Broome County on July 14, 1828. They are both buried in the cemetery at Upper Lisle, Broome County, NY. 3. I have two items that may eventually help nail down this slippery character, but I have no information as to his parents. (1) In "Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution", 17 vols., v. 15, p. 290, is the following: Elijah Sweet, Private, Capt. Aaron Rowley's Co. Col. John Brown's detachment of militia; entered service June 30, 1777; discharged July 21, 1777 near Ft. Ann., service 22 days; detchment raised in Berksire Co. for service at Ft. nn on an alarm at Ticonderoga; also Capt. Rowley's Co., Col. John Ashley's detachment of Berkshire Co. militia; entered service July 22, 1777, discharged July 28, 1777; service 7 days at Stillwater. If the birthdate you have (29 Nov. 1748) is correct, this Elijah would have been 27 yrs. old. (2) I have copies of several legal documents in which Elijah Sweet is mentioned. No information if this is the same Elijah as in (1), but all the documents were filed in Berkshire Co. The first is a deed transferring land in W. Stockbridge MA from a Caleb Sweet, carpenter, to an Elijah Sweet. Another is a 1792 judgment against Elijah Sweet for non-payment of an obligation and an instruction from a Justice of the Peace to arrest him and lock him up -- except that he was then "out of the Commonwealth". Another is a 1793 deed from Elijah Sweet to Samuel Sweet (then of Rensselaerville, Albany Co., NY) to property in W. Stockbridge, MA; and the last is a deed from Samuel Sweet (then of Rensselaerville, Albany Co., NY) to Nathaniel Young of W. Stockbridge, for the land previously owned (?) by Elijah. Interestingly, there are also 1793 and 1794 judgments against Caleb Sweet (then "out of the commonwealth") for debts owed Phineas Barnes and approval to sell his land and other chattels to satisfy these debts. I also know that on 6 June 1788, the Van Rensselaers gave a land lease to Eber, Elijah, and Samuel Sweet (and possibly Caleb) for lot 230 (160 acres) in (or near) Rensselaerville, Albany Co., NY. Eber had announced his intention to marry Lucy Dryer, daughter of Allen Dryer of W. Stockbridge, MA, on 30 March 1788. So, apparently the whole tribe picked up and fled W. Stockbridge shortly thereafter, perhaps ahead of their creditors. Samuel evidently settled up in 1795 with sale of W. Stockbridge property. Allen Dryer, Samuel's next-door neighbor in W. Stockbridge and Eber's father-in-law, apparently followed the Sweet crowd to New York, for he and his wife are both buried in Madison Co., as are Eber, his wife and several of their children. I know this doesn't solve the parentage of Elijah -- nor does it help me much in determining parentage of Eber, who founded the line I am researching. But every little bit helps! Walt Sweet

    3. Wow! I think we now have 3 Phoebe SWEETs. My Phoebe married John PIERCE in Cortland Co., 1820; Geri's Phoebe married Asabel Holcomb; and there was someone else that had a Phoebe SWEET connected to Cortland Co.
