From what I have seen on that, it was generally anywhere from 5 days to 2 weeks, with the later time being more typical during this period. You will notice that the VR was in West Stockbridge. It could be that there may be further information in Stockbridge. The resource I have for towns of Mass. has that there is fiche from Holbrooke/Archives Publishing and there is a manuscript/typescript for this town at NEHGS. [Which means the town of Stockbridge should have records?] Additionally, West Stockbridge was formed from Stockbridge in 1774. Hope that helps. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lee '" <sweetp@txucom.net> To: <SWEET-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, February 02, 2003 3:28 PM Subject: Re: Reuben Sweet of Georgetown N.Y. > Cheryl: > > Thanks for the input. Cheryl: Thanks for the input. The records certainly tie down the intention of Eber to marry Lucy Dryer and give some credence to their marriage possibly in Apr. Do you know if there was a required waiting period after filing an intention to marry? Peg: Thanks for the Info. The names of children of Eber Sweet and Lucy Dryer are really a big help. Several of the names you listed are found in the Erieville Cemetery, c.1915 list, Town of Nelson, Madison County, NY. Am having difficulty reconciling some of the dates tho. The marriage date Apr. 1788 seems fairly definate and childrens birthdates seem to follow logically but if Lucy Dryer was born Abt 1750 she would have been 62 yrs old by the time Betsey Sweet was born. Not impossible but unlikely. Do you think the Eber Sweet of 1749 could be the father of Eber who married Lucy? Or I guess someone else could have fathered Eber. I'd be interested in what you think Lee Sweet ----- Original Message ----- From: <Sweet4ester@aol.com> To: <SWEET-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, February 01, 2003 9:28 AM Subject: Re: Reuben Sweet of Georgetown N.Y. > In a message dated 1/31/2003 7:05:34 PM Pacific Standard Time, > sweetp@txucom.net writes: > > > Subj:Reuben Sweet of Georgetown N.Y. > > Date:1/31/2003 7:05:34 PM Pacific Standard Time > > From:sweetp@txucom.net > > Reply-to:SWEET-L@rootsweb.com > > To:SWEET-L@rootsweb.com > > Sent from the Internet > > > > Need help in finding the father of Reuben Sweet born Abt. 1805 Georgetown > > N.Y. > > married Mary Ann Shepard born Abt. 1802 Hartford Conn. Need help in finding the father of Reuben Sweet born Abt. 1805 Georgetown N.Y. married Mary Ann Shepard born Abt. 1802 Hartford Conn. I think the same Reuben is in the 1840 Census of N.Y. I cannot trace Reuben after 1840 and think he may have died before 1850. Family tradition says Eber Sweet born 1767 in Mass. died June 1 1850 in Erieville N.Y. Sweet was indeed the eight child of Ira Sweet and Sarah Hadsell. An entry dated 13 May 1847 in the Pike County, Illinois Register of Deeds identifies the" heirs at law of Ira Sweet" Alll three daughters are named along with their husbands as well as five sons: Ira A. Sweet; Nathan Sweet; Samuel Sweet; Rensselaer Sweet and Andrew Sweet. In the case of Andrew, I believe his full name was Thomas Andrew Sweet. In the case of Sylvania Sweet who married Nathaniel Smith, Nathaniel is named along with his wife Louisa. Accordingly, I believe that Sylvania's full name was either Sylvania Louisa or Louisa Sylvania Sweet. I first identified Sylvania from another secondary source "Portrait & Biographical Album of Pike and Calhoun Counties, Illinois" Biographical Publishing Co. Chicago, 1891 which identified her as the daughter of Ira Sweet and Sarah Hadsell. Further supporting my claim of a familial relationship between Samuel O. Sweet and this family is the fact that Samuel and Nathan's names appear consecutively on the 1850 Census living in Martinsburg Township, Pike County, Illinois. Although both names are spelled SWEAT rather then SWEET on the Census, both wives are identified which leaves little doubt in my mind that Nathan Sweet and Samuel O. Sweet were living in close proximity to each other at the time. I also found some information (which, unfortunately, I did not document at the time) that stated that at the time of their parents death in 1844, Rensselaer Sweet, a minor, chose to live with his brother Ira A. Sweet and Thomas Andrew chose to live with his uncle, Job Sweet (or vice versa). I conjecture that Samuel O., who would have been 19 years old at the time also lived with his brother Ira as he (Samuel) later named one of his children Ira A. Sweet. One final item: In my initial message I cite a secondary source "History of Pike County, Illinois" as saying that Ira A. Sweet was the fifth of eight children of Ira Sweet and Sarah Hadsell. Although that information is correct as it appears in the source, I now believe the source is wrong and that the "fifth" was a typographical error for "first". I am convinced that Ira A. Sweet's (the son of Ira and Sarah Hadsell Sweet) correct birthdate was 1820 and not 1830.

Henry Stephen Sweet's grandfather and my direct ancestor were brothers. Henry Stephen Sweet was the son of Stephen Sweet born 27 Feb 1807 in Harford, Susquehanna County, PA and Polly Seymour born 27 Nov 1809 in NY. The 1850 PA Census shows 10 year old "Stephen H." living in the household of 43 year old Stephen Sweet in Harford. The 1860 PA Census shows 19 year old "Henry" living in the household of 27 year old William Sweet (Henry Stephen's oldest brother) and 50 year old Polly Sweet (presumably Stephen Sweet's widow). Stephen Sweet born 1807 is the child of Asahel Sweet born 11 October 1776 in Attleboro, Bristol County, MA and Nancy Tiffany born abt. 1780 in MA. Asahel lived to be 95 years old and I have recorded his household from the PA Census for 1850, 1860 and 1870. Stephen Sweet was no longer living at home at the time of these censuses. Asahel Sweet born 1776 in Attleboro was the child of Amos Sweet born 09 March 1734/35 in Attleboro, Bristol County, MA and Hannah Richardson born 1744 in Attleboro, Bristol County MA. Amos Sweet is a Revolutionary War Veteran.
