There's an account on the internet about tombstone carvers of Cortland County that says the town of Virgil (where Thomas lived in 1830 & 1835), and other towns in that area, was settled by families named Whiting, Sweet Moore and Joiner. These families apparently came from Windham County, VT. ONe of the carvers was Eber Sweet (possibly short for Ebenezer). What further information do you have on Phoebe?

I received the following in a personal e-mail from Peg Forester with information key to my research: "Oliver SWEET (b.18 Aug 1746-East Greenwich,Kent,Rhode Island;d.3 Jan 1816-Oswego,Oswego,New York)" My interest, of course, is based on the reference to Oliver's death in Oswego, 1816. Sadly, Peg has told me that it came from research done by her sister who is now deceased. Among the sources Peg has made reference to include the following: .... Descendants of James Sweet Film # 0385003 .... Rhode Island Genealogies pg 911. .... Encyclopedia of Biography Vol. 4 Pg 308-309. .... "Descendants of James Sweet," Salt Lake film # 185002. .... Austin - Gen. Dict. of Rhode Island, Records of the Colony of Rhode Island, .... Burke - Landed Gentry, I sure would like to find where she uncovered the source of information. If anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear from you!!!
Thanks again to Cyndi for her continued help and suggestions. Here is one of the references from a previous e-mail message: "One of the parcels of land noted in Benjamin Sweet's will was bordered south on land of John Gardner. (EG Probate Records, Book 4, p. 128-131)." Here is perhaps some further evidence for the Sweet-Gardner connection, taken from the East Greenwich town records re. the will of Samuel Gardner and his wife Rachel, whose son Henry married Elizabeth Rice (widow of George?) married in March 1746. If this is indeed correct, these were the parents of the Susannah Rice who married Oliver Sweet. "EG town records show that 30 Apr 1768 Henry Gardner, executor of the will of his father Samuel Gradner, yeoman, deceased, presented the will. The council heard the witnesses and approved the will. Henry Gardner submitted an inventory amounting to 74 lbs 8 shillings lawful money. Proved and approved. He too swore that he had shown all the possessions to the men doing the inventory and promised to inform the council of additions. Rachel Gardner, Samuel's widow, sent a letter to the council formally accepting the provisions made for her in the will and refusing to be an executrix of the will. Then on 29 June 1776 Henry Gardner of East Greenwich presented the last will and testament of his mother Rachel Gardner, widow, deceased. Proved." These are abstracts taken from town records located at the NEHGS. I also have the following reference: "Will of Rachel Gardner from the RI Genealogical Register, April 1979, will dated 29 May 1776, proved 29 Jun 1776, pgs 219-220, mentions: Mercy Matteson wife of Joniah Matteson, Rebecah Sweet wife of William Sweet Jr., Mary Greene wife of Ebenezer Greene, Rebecah Brayton wife of Gideon Brayton, Sarah Johnson wife of Obediah Johnson, Sarah Rew (Tew?) daughter of Samuel Rew, Elizabeth Gardner wife of Henry Gardner, John Gardner, and Henry Gardner." Nix to some of my earlier communication re. Oliver. My computer which I use for genealogical research crashed 3 months ago, which makes it more difficult to recover my material: (1) Robin Coon is correct in the fact that Oliver was married to Alice, as per land records in both Herkimer and Oswego counties; (2) I have no proof that Benjamin Sweet was married to Elizabeth Hill. As far as I know, her maiden name is unknown. Let me also clarify Oliver Sweet's entry in the 1777 RI military census as having one man 16-50 A (able to bear arms) and one man 60+. EG town records are helpful here: "On 24 Feb 1776 Henry Gardner was allowed 15 lbs, 14 shillings, etc. for keeping Elizabeth Havens and Thomas Langford, two of the poor of the town. The council agreed with Oliver Sweet that he should take them for the next year at the rate of 50 Spanish milled dollars with the additional allowance if they became ill. Then on 22 Feb 1777 Oliver Sweet was allowed 1 lbs, 6 shillings lawful money for clothing Thomas Langford. He agreed to keep Langford for 7 shillings per week, with the provision that he not charge for mending Langford's clothes. He was not to have any addition to the stipend if it was necessary to hire a nurse. On 27 Dec 1777 Oliver Sweet was allowed 6 lbs 3 shillings for a coffin for Thomas Langford, one of the poor of the town. He was allowed a further 12 lbs, 12 shillings, for keeping Langford from the 22nd of February until his death on the 9th of October."
I have Oliver married to Alice, and their son Joseph married to Ruth, maiden name unknown. This is my husband's direct line. Oliver -> Joseph -> Mary. Mary married Jacob Coon. Anyone else related through Jacob & Mary?
I am looking for any siblings or parents of Ira Martin Sweet. He was born Jan 5, 1824 in Oswego, New York. Thanks Natalie
Paul wrote: <<East Greenwich town records, which indicated a close relationship between Henry Gardner and Oliver Sweet.>> Further evidence of the Sweet - Gardner connection in this family: John Congdon, Benjamin Sweet and Phebe Sweet witnessed the will of Gideon Gardner 16 July 1782 EG (EG Probate Records, Book 3, p. 347-8). One of the parcels of land noted in Benjamin Sweet's will was bordered south on land of John Gardner. (EG Probate Records, Book 4, p. 128-131). It would be really helpful if everyone would refer to their sources when posting information to the list. I know it's time consuming, but it enables everyone to follow up to their own satisfaction on items posted. Thanks! Cyndi
Thanks to everyone for the information! Here are the results of some of my research in response to the question raised by Cyndi: "I note in Paul's response below he refers to a wife Ruth. Paul - is there further information on this marriage? How does this Oliver with wife Ruth relate, if at all, to the Oliver Sweet son of Benjamin who m. 6 February 1767 East Greenwich RI Susannah Rice, dau. of George Rice? (Arnold VR)." That is, of course, one of the issues still unresolved. If we are talking about the same Oliver, was Oliver married twice? If so, when did Susannah die and the marriage to Ruth take place? If it took place in NY, then these records might be terribly difficult to uncover especially since these records seem so limited. I also need to take a closer look at the land records for Herkimer since that is where I first learn of Oliver and Ruth prior to 1800 and then again in Scriba as early as 1806. I wonder too about land records in Easton (Albany, not Washington cty, as I had previously mentioned). I believe too that there are quite a few records for Benjamin Sweet's (1722-1789) brother William in Albany, NY. Incidentally, I believe that Arnold cited Susannah Rice, Oliver's wife, as the daughter of "George Rice, deceased." There is another record, I believe, for Elizabeth Rice to Henry Gardner that occurred in East Greenwich in the late 1740s-early 1750s, which I speculate was the widow of George. This is strengthened by East Greenwich town records, which indicated a close relationship between Henry Gardner and Oliver Sweet. One final thought re. my ggggrandfather Benjamin Sweet (1780-1828), who appeared next to Oliver in the 1800 Norway census, nearby Oliver in the 1810 Oneida census ("B. Sweat), and then in Scriba, Oswego, NY in 1820 census. I find it interesting that he named his first daughter Susannah (1799-1802) and then about five years later named another daughter Susannah.
John A. Sweet vouched for Mary Albro's marriage to John Sweet when she applied for widow's pension. John A. Sweet is enumerated in 1830 at Smithfield, Madison Co., NY, p. 419; and 1840 at Stockbridge, Madison Co., NY, p. 122. John Sweet. However, please forgive me in butting in to the following question which Marilyn addressed to Cindi. The census in question is not the 1790 census but the 1800 census in Norway, Herkimer, NY. Oliver was listed in Easton, Washington, NY in the 1790 census. These are the same Sweets which I believe removed to Scriba, Oswego, NY. Oliver and Ruth purchased land there in 1806, along with several others of his neighbors in Norway, including the Coons and Wordens. The Worden-Sweet Cemetery in Scriba is located on part of the land Joseph Worden had originally purchased at the same time as Oliver. The Coons, Sweets (appeared as Swett/Sweat) and Wordens were listed together in the 1810 Oneida census since Oswego had not yet been formed. The relationships between these families continue in Scriba basically from that point on, appearing together in the 1820 census and even later.
