It appears from looking at the two census records for Sylvester Sweet (ae 63 in 1850 in Hancock, MA, and then ae 73 in 1860 in Rensselaer) that they were the same person. Unless I am missing something, the records agree that this Sylvester was born in 1787, not 1777 as Kathy had mentioned in her initial e-mail. I think she simply erred by ten years when calculating his birth year in the subject line.
This family was in Hancock, Berkshire, MA in the 1850 census. The gedcoms I have seen identify Sylvester as the Jeremiah Sweet and Jane Eldred. Sylvester was born in Hancock in 1787, married Sarah Bentley, and died in Stephentown on 7 Feb 1865. I've not seen a list of their children, but perhaps someone else can help.

Note that 1787 is 10 years later than the specified 1777. It seems likely that we're talking about two different Sylvesters. In any case, I don't have a complete list of the children of Sylvester and Sarah, but the census of 1850 shows three: Patience, Phebe, and Ira, aged 34, 22, and 20, respectively. The rest had presumably gone off to make their own way in the world, or else died. Patience and Phebe, like their father, were both buried in the Baptist Cemetery in Stephentown. John Chandler
I am looking for the Parents of William Sweet, born 1839 in North Gwillimbury, Ont. Canada. I know that he has 6 children. Bonnie, Kingston, Ont.
In the 1860 census for Rensselaer County, NY, there is a man named Sylvester SWEET, aged 73, a farmer, b. MA, with a wife, Sarah, aged 62, b. NY, and a daughter (I presume), Patience, aged 42, b. MA. Does anyone know who Sylvester's parents are? Thanks. Kathy

Hi Sweet kin, I also have been working for several years to try to sort out my Sweets. Documentation will only get me to Joseph Sweet, of Nova Scotia, Canada. He was first married to Rosanna Barron, then to Rachael Beiswenger. I have not found the death date of Rosanna, but the marriage to Rachael was bet. 1859 and 1861. Their first child, Charles L. was born in Halifax, so it is possible that this marriage occurred there and perhaps also, the death of Rosanna. After the birth of Charles, the family returned to Hants Co., NS. There three more children were born. Nelson, George and Ermina. All of the boys left Canada and went to Jackson Co., MI. Ermina remained in NS, married William Marr, had several children, left him and went to Toronto. She then married a Lebeau, first name unknown. I am a grandchild of George, son of Joseph and Rachael. I have been unable to get documentation that proves who the father of Joseph was. Some say he was a child of James, son of Benoni and Lydia Sweet, but I find nothing to establish that as fact. In fact, I also find equally believable documentation that Joseph was the child of a James Sweet and Elizabeth McLane, in England and the family came to NS after his birth. If anyone has other info, I would exchange any of the info that I have with them, in the hope of finally getting this family proven one way or the other. Thank you for any help or suggestions.-----------------Phyllis Ceratto Evans

My Sweet line starts with Hiram and Malinda Sweet in Warren County Indiana. According to the 1860 Warren County Census, Hiram married Malinda in NY my guess about 1834. They had three children in NY; Eliza abt 1835, Thomas abt. 1838 and Nancy abt. 1839, before moving to Warren County IN. They had William abt 1844, Maryann abt. 1848, and Jane abt. 1849. Thomas married Evaline/Evelen about 1859 probably in Warren County IN. Their children were Hiram L. born abt 1861, Ira W. born abt. 1863 in Iroquois Co. IL., Laura born abt. 1864 in IN. Eunis I. born about 1866, and Anson born abt 1868 in IN. Does anyone have any information on this family? Sincerely, Rick Eklund
