Not sure if this was meant for me, but I'll take a shot at it. It's not entirely clear whether George S. Sweet had brothers. His 1801 marriage record says he was the son of Samuel and was of North Kingstown, but it doesn't say that Samuel was also of N.K. If he was, then he could be the Samuel who had a wife Ann and a number of children, of which the first two names cannot be read (remember, this was North Kingstown, where the vital records were half-destroyed by fire). There is no James on record in the extended family. Another possibility is a Samuel of East Greenwich who married Catherine Aylesworth of North Kingstown in 1781. However, the only child on record for that Samuel is a son Johnson Sweet born in 1782. Also, I see no James in the extended family of George S. > According to cards sent me by Violet Kettle, ancestors of > Geo. Smith Sweet are as follows, starting with > 1st gen. in America: > John > James > Benoni > James > James Jr. > Samuel There were lots of Jameses, but I don't have any documentation of this Benoni having a son James. (By the way, there were surprisingly many Benonis, too.) John Chandler

At least I now know I can probably rule him out. If you have a theory as to whom Dorcas might belong to, I am open to suggestions. I have definetly placed her in Seneca County in 1822 when she would have been abt 18-20 yrs old. So I feel her family was probably near by, but then again you cannot be certain. I am planning a trip this spring to Sen., Wayne, and Cayuga, I would love to find some answers. I also just noticed that there was a Benjamin D. Sweet was there in 1830 and William Sweet in 1850 living in the Ohio county where Dorcas moved. Do those names ring a bell. William was born in Ohio, but his sister Jemima was born in NY abt 1825. Thanks again,Kim

James' son Lemuel Sweet is my g-g-g-grandfather. I have James' family fairly well documented and you can probably rule him out as Dorcas' father. Tim
As several members of the SWEET mailing list have extensive knowledge, I'm daring to ask a couple of questions that don't have anything to do with my Sweet ancestors but another branch entirely (but, hey, one of them eventually married a Sweet). And I'm sure if y'all don't have the direct answer, you'll know where to tell me to go look, in a nice way. 1 - Blacksmiths. During 1860-1870, how long did it take to become a blacksmith? Could the trade have been learned during the Civil War? My ancestor went from a farmhand at 21 years old (1860) to being a blacksmith at 31 (1870). 2 - Does Blacksmithing provide a good income during the late 1800s? (ie, could sons have become a physician & a lawyer ?) 3 - Is blacksmithing all that common or is it fairly rare? ie, about how many blacksmiths could work in a county, in say, Kentucky? My thanks for your answers and indulgence. Deborah Sweet

Hi John, Is this "lineup" correct? Did any of George S. Sweet's brothers have a James that might have been mine? If so, dates please. Also how about his grandchildren? The only clue I have is that my grandmother saved a newspaper obit in which the ink has eaten into the paper but I think the date written is June 1827: "At Middletown on Saturday evening last, Mrs. Fanny Sweet, wife of Capt. George S. Sweet, and daughter of the late Paul Wightman, aged 37 years" I assume that is my line. My gg gf James might have crawled from under a rock for all the clues I have found.
