Joan in Portland: I, too, sent a message to Jane at her "old" address. And, yes, sometimes I find that my ISP does not seem to return mail to me immediately - don't know why. I am interested in Joan's connection to PIERCE and SWEET, as my John PIERCE married Phebe SWEET in Cortland Co., NY in 1820. Laura Southern Oregon PS: Joan, I met a lady in Waterloo, IA by the name of Meddaugh a number of years ago when we were doing on-site research. She had a brick wall, that I have been trying to help her with - can't remember what it is right now. I'd have to look it up. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joan Meddaugh" <lpmj@juno.com> To: <SWEET-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, March 07, 2004 9:14 PM Subject: test I recently send out a query via the Sweet list regarding Delos Sweet of Madison Co.NY. I see that you are working on the Sweets. Can you tell me if you have any infor on The Sweets from North Gwillimbury, Ont Canada, York County. Thanks a lot Bonnie, Kingston, Ont.
Hi Bonnie, I am sorry to say I don't have any info on that Sweet family. The particular Sweet family member I am working on was married to my grandmother's mother 12-15 years after the death of her husband Truman Payne. I never even knew the man existed. Then one day a cousin who is also new to me happened to mention to me that he knew of a man with the last na me of sweet that may have been married to my grandmother's mother Olive. After some digging and some wonderful help of the Madison Co, list I came up with the name of Delos. All I can tell you is that there are a lot of Sweets in Madison Co. NY so you might want to start there by joining their list and making a query. It sure can be frustrating trying to locate a relative. I myself, am having problems locating any thing about David L. Schwartz/Swartz of Potter Co. He is my grandfather but was married years earlier to a person with the of May Say. They had a daughter named Mouvinta/Tinta Vinta Schwartz/Swartz they may have had a son as well named Gerald. But since all but 3 of my cousins have passed away on my mother's side, I am having trouble finding out stuff. In fact, regarding David I have found noting about him before he married my grandmother Nora Wheeler of Allegheny, Catt. Co. NY. And even tho David was born in Pa as were his parents I find nothing. Well enough of my chatter about long lost relatives. I do hope that you will be able to find out more about your family. And if you care to stay in touch I would love to hear about your progress. Joan in Portland, Or
I have not received any messages in 4 days. seems unusual that none of the message boards I am subscribed to are not active so I am sending this as a test to see if I need to resubscribe. Hello list, Is any one out there that might be related to a Delos Sweet from around Madison Co. NY? I am most interested in finding out about him after he married my grandmother's mother about 12 -15 years or so after her husband Truman Payne died in 1875. The woman Delos married as his second wife was Olive Damon Payne. So give or take a few years I would say Delos married Olive about 1890. Thank you for any help that you can send me in advance. I am writing in response to Larry's inquiry regarding Joseph and Elizabeth Sweet in the 1860 Philadelphia census: 1870 Philadelphia (Ward 20, District 66), 201 Joseph 'Sweets' 55 William 15 There were no other family members listed. However, this was a second enumeration that seems to be incomplete. The first enumeration is also indexed, but I could not find the family there. There was also a Joseph Sweet listed in the 1880 census (Philadelphia, ED 404, Sheet 276C). Perhaps the piece of information most intriguing is that there is Civil Ward record of a Joseph Sweet (with wife Elizabeth) who served in the 28th PA Infantry, Co. D. This unit was formed in Philadelphia in 1861. There were Civil War invalid and widow pensions filed for this man and his wife. Those files, available from the National Archives, might provide the information you are missing.
Thanks for the information. Unfortunately. I live only about 20 miles from Upper Sandusky, Ohio and there is not a death record for Dorcas Sweet. If others are looking in Ohio a good source for obituaries is the online R. B. Hayes library site. Thanks,Kim
I just checked my Handy Book for Genealogists (from Everton Publishers in Logan, UT) and Wyandot Co., Ohio Probate Judge has death records from 1845-1908 and burial records for the same period. Maybe you'll get lucky and find a death record (with parents names?) on Dorcas. Address in my 1991 version Handy Book has the following address: Wyandot County County Courthouse Upper Sandusky, OH 43351 419-294-1432 Many area codes have changed since 1991 so phone no. may not be accurate. Good luck. Dorcas was living in Seneca and Wayne county New York between 1820-1842. Dorcas married first John Clark abt 1820-21. They had son Henry D. Clark in Lodi, Seneca County NY in 1822. A daughter Sophia W. Clark was born in 1825 according to Seneca Co, Ohio history in Rensselaer Co.,NY. John Clark and Dorcas moved to Lyons ,Wayne county between 1822-26. John then died and Dorcas married Elijah Lake from Romulus, Seneca County by 1830. By 1840 they were living in Junius, Seneca County NY. In 1842 they moved to Wyandot County, Ohio. If Dorcas was the daughter of one of the Sweet's living in Seneca County by 1820, she would have been the daughter of Charles, James, Jonathon, or Nicholas.
