He married Susannah SPENCER The Benjamin Sweet who died in 1753 was someone else: son of Richard Sweet and husband of Margaret Hammett. His will, made in 1746 and proved in 1753, makes the identity clear. Your Benjamin, on the other hand, is rumored to have moved to Dutchess County, NY, and died there some years later. > The only child I have is David. David was the 12th and last child. The 12 were all duly entered in the vital records of East Greenwich, spanning the years 1718 to 1738: Robert /Sweet/ (M); b. 1718 Jun 28 Ruth /Sweet/ (F); b. 1720 May 8 Benjamin /Sweet/ (M); b. 1721-2 Feb 6 Henry /Sweet/ (M); b. 1723 Nov 10 Francis /Sweet/ (M); b. 1725-6 Mar 8 Theodosia /Sweet/ (F); b. 1727 Oct 30 Susanna /Sweet/ (F); b. 1729 Jul 25 Amey /Sweet/ (F); b. 1731 Apr 22 Welthian /Sweet/ (F); b. 1732-3 Feb 3 Hannah /Sweet/ (F); b. 1734 Nov 19 Theophilus /Sweet/ (M); b. 1736 Dec 16 David /Sweet/ (M); b. 1738 Dec 2 (See Arnold, _Vital Records of Rhode Island_ v.1, p.158) > Benjamin's parents were Henry SWEET, b. Also, note that there is a now-discredited theory that Henry's wife was Mary Griffin. If you want to keep "Griffin", you must reject the "Andrew[s]" theory, and vice versa. > Henry's parents were John SWEET, b. 1620 in Devonshire, England, d. Feb 27, > Newport, RI The place of origin of the Rhode Island Sweets is not known. Devon is a popular theory, but evidence is lacking. Wales is another popular theory, but, again, no evidence. There is a possibility that we soon may have some evidence, one way or another, from the Sweet DNA project. There is a participant whose ancestors are documented back to Devon, and, when his results are available, we can compare them against the other participants, including those who descend from the Rhode Island Sweets. If they match, that will be persuasive evidence of Devon origins. Of course, if they don't match, that won't prove they DIDN'T come from Devon, but it will raise some doubts. John Chandler

Being a Sweet yourself, you can compare your Y DNA to that of other Sweets and discover which ones you are related to. We now have five different groups of Sweets identified from their different DNA patterns, and one of them appears to be the group of descendants of the immigrant John Sweet of Salem, while another appears to be the group of descendants of John Sweet/Swett of Newbury. 3. Michelle: Many, many thanks for your kind offer -- I really appreciate it and any help you can give me. Family lore has it that our Sweet line is descended from the John Sweet who landed in Salem, Mass. in 1633 (at Sweet's Cove there) from Wales or elsewhere in England. I have hit the proverbial "brick wall" after tracing our line back from family Bible notations to a James Sweet. who was apparently born on April 1, 1758 in Rhode Island and married a lady named Sarah (last name possibly Green) who appears to have been born on Sept. 6, 1760. They had a son, also named James, who was born May 19, 1791 and on Aug. 16, 1820 married Charlotte Reynolds who was born on Aug. 5 or 13, 1802. The location in Rhode Island where these events occured seems to have been North Kingston. What I have been unable to locate in spite of searching Mormon Church microfilms of the extant birth records for that area -- which were partially destroyed in a fire -- are the names and dates of the father and grandfather of the James born in 1758. I shall be most grateful for any assistance you can give me in my quest, As an aside, can you tell me where you found the James Sylvester Perry Sweet "book" and whether it was in mimeograph form or actually had been printed? Other sources have indicated that he died before completing and actually printing this book, and that his family made mimeographed copies and sent them to several libraries. Again, many thanks for your offer and I look forward to hearing from you whenever you have the time - I wonder how you have any with your family, animals and job to keep you busy!!!!. /s/ Joseph Sweet ----- Original Message ----- From: "michelle" <michelleadailey@wowway.com> To: <SWEET-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 20, 2004 11:04 PM Subject: Sweet Records > Fellow Sweet researchers, > > I have a lot of early (John Sweet b. 1520) Sweet information that I can assist a lot of you with.
