Based on the match that Michelle noticed in the 1860 and 1880 census information, I would suggest several avenues of research that Larry could pursue. A Joseph Sweet (wife Elizabeth) served from Pennsylvania during the Civil War, Co. D, 28 PA Infantry. He filed for invalid pension 1872; the widow filed for pension 1879 (could be 1889 - difficult to read date). Send for this pension from the National Archives to investigate this further. William Sweet is found in the 1880 Philadelphia census and 1890 City Directory. He is not found in the 1910 Miracode index. So, I would suggest Larry check for a death record for William F. Sweet at the Philadelphia City Archives, 3101 Market Street Philadelphia, PA 19108. 215-686-1581 They have birth, death and marriage records 1860 thru 1915. Also court naturalization records, city directories, deeds, etc. Investigation at the Archives should be helpful. Larry has a death date of January 1952 for Frank Sweet - Larry, does that imply you know where Frank died? If so, you should obtain his death record, obituary, funeral home records - anything that might be helpful. Just some thoughts. Let the list know what you find out. Thanks Michelle, As for the NY connection, although, I see simular naming patterns, I have yet to find any proof. I can't seem to get past William. But something interesting though, is that the name Caleb was given to one of the grandsons. Don't know if this means anything or not, but I think it is worth placing it on the "Hmmmm..." list for now. Hi Becky, I haven't found anything else yet on the Virginia Sweets. I had never heard that the Rockbridge Sweets maybe related to the Sweets in NY. I was wondering where William was in the 1820 census, maybe in NY? I'll see if I can find a connection there and let you know. Hope all is well, Michelle

William David told one of his granddaughters that this line was related to the NY Sweets, but she did not find out how or any names? I have been stumped on this line it seems forever. In the 1880 census William F. Sweet stated that his father was born in PA and his mother was born in England. This matches the family of Joseph and Elizabeth Sweet in Ward 20, Philedelphia, PA. that Cyndi found. Ambrose and Maria were both born in NY.
We have two new results in the Sweet DNA project, each being only the first half of the Y DNA test. You can see the results on the web page http://www.fairleafarm.harvard.ma.us/dnasweet.htm and the corresponding lineages on http://www.fairleafarm.harvard.ma.us/linsweet.htm As you can see, one tentatively matches the majority group, while the other does not. It is interesting to note that the non-matching result is from a test subject whose line goes back in modern times to Devon, which is widely believed to be the ancestral home of all English Sweets/Swetts. It is also interesting that this test subject comes closest to matching an American Sweet who has not yet been traced to any particular Colonial immigrant and who (until now, at least) has not matched any other testee. Stay tuned for the second halves of these results. If anybody knows other Sweets with modern ties to Devon, or to other locales in England, please pass the word about the project. John Chandler
thank you so much. William Sweet was born in 1839 in North Gwillimbury, York Co., Ont. Can. His son was Alexander Sweet, born in 1865, same town. Can you tell me if my William Sweet born in 1839 in Ontario, Canada is related in some way too? Thank you. Bonnie in Kingston, Ont.
Larry, There are only two William Sweet's in Pennsylvania in 1860 who are close to being the right age to be your William b. 1854. In 1860, there is a 5 year old William in the household of Joseph and Elizabeth Sweet, Ward 20, Philedelphia, PA, p. 437. There are two other probable children in the family, Francis and Catherine. Also in 1860, there is a 5 year old William in the household of Ambrose and Maria Sweet, Chatham, Tioga Co., PA, p. 105. Other probable children are George, Mahala, and Lewis. Since your William was b. 1854 and died after 1880, you should be able to obtain a death record that will tell you more about his background. Do you know when and/or where he died?
