While that may be true in theory, we now have results from DNA testing that show it to be incorrect in the cases tested so far. There are 20 test subjects with the family name SWEET, 5 with SWETT, and one with SWEAT. Nobody with one name matches anybody with a different name. (Not yet, anyway.) My great-grandmother was Etta Sweet, and I am seriously trying to verify who her father was. It appears to be this Oscar per the census. Oscar seems to have died when Etta was still a young teenager.
