    2. Wanda, Have you ever come across an Olive Sweet, born in the 1820's in New York State, who married Joseph Baum on March 9, 1846? They went to Canada by 1857, where one of their sons, William Baum, was born on March 4, 1857. They then were in Wisconsin by the 1870's. Lauren

    3. Eileen, I have a strong Sweet line in Maine and Canada. Your husband's family connects to mine in a convoluted way. I should mention that in the attempt to find my own Sweet line, I have put nearly every Sweet line I can find in in whatever way they connect, however distantly. I had Amos Sweet and Hannah Richardson and their son, Asahel, but no more information about him. I have added what you sent. As for your own line, I believe we may also connect but do not have the connection. I have 3 Enoch Wentworth's, b. 1766, 1802, 1823. I also have 2 Lemuel Wentworth's one born 1754, one in the 1730's. I also have a Lydia as the sister of Lemuel and a Martha. I have 12 William's. Lemuel and Lydia were the children of Sion and Hannah (Pettingill) Wentworth. They had 7 children born in the 1750-1760 time frame. They lived in Maine, near the southwestern part. From what I can tell, this is one of those peripheral lines I put in in the hopes I would connect them at some point. I also have a LOT of Philbricks, no Thanksfuls, alas. Where is Barretson, Maine?? Looking forward to hearing from you, again. Wanda Hilyard Gonzalez Eileen Gillette <bgeg@directcon.net> wrote: Hello list, I have a SWEET line on my family tree and my husband one on his. Joseph was 44 years old, a tailor, born in Pennsylvania. His wife is Elizabeth, 31 years old born in England. SIblings show as Francis, 15 (male), and Catherine, 9. 2. I think I go back to Oliver Sweet and Susannah Rice through son Edmond Sweet born abt 1770. He goes to Herkimer Co, New York and in 1800 Census Oliver, Benjamin and Edmond Sweet all live next door to each other. Edmond Sweet is my 4th ggrandfather. He is the right age to be a son of Oliver. Another man I met, was descended from Benjamin. He is the one who told me that this Oliver was Oliver who married Susannah Rice and later an Alice( the land record has an Alice listed) Is this the Oliver That was on the DNA test? Marilyn

    3. Hi Marilyn, It is possible. I have no record of an Edmond Sweet, but I think it likely that Oliver and Susannah had more than two children. However, there are a lot of Benjamin Sweets in the various branches of the Sweet family. Oliver's father and grandfather were both named Benjamin. Oliver also had a son named Benjamin. I've seen many other Benjamin Sweets in other family trees. You will have to research this more to make the connection. My great-great-grandfather, Oliver Sweet, is the Oliver listed in John Chandler's Sweet Family DNA Project. 3. Hi Jane -- I think I've a posting before about your Delos Sweet. My mother has a cousin named Delos (a female) .... not in my Sweet line .... so your query about a Delos Sweet always makes me think of Mom's cousin. Anyway, today I had some time so decided to see what I could find for you. I subscribe to Ancestry.com so have access to all the census records which has been a big help to me. I've found some info. for you, but I can't find ANY evidence that Olive Payne was married to a Delos Sweet. I'll tell you what I've found, but have a question for you and want to type it now before I forget. Why do you think that your Olive Payne married a Delos Sweet? If I know your reason, then maybe it will give me another avenue to research. Please note that anything in square [brackets] means it was difficult to read and is only my "best guess." One census record I found is: 1910 U.S. CENSUS: Part of Philadelphia Town, Jefferson Co., New York, Page 160B, Dwelling 77, Family 78: Sweet, Delos Head M W 58 M3 20 NY NY NY farmer, dairy farm OA OFF --, Olive A. Mother F W 79 Wd 5 3 NY NY NY [Wager], Estella Boarder F W 40 Wd 2 1 NY NY NY hired woman, dairy farm W --, Ida " F W 24 S NY NY NY I don't know how familiar you are with census records, but the M W after "Head" (of family) means Male, White. The "M3" means he is married and it is his 3rd marriage. (I wonder where his wife is?) Then the "20" means he has been married for 20 years. (I think this means to his 3rd wife.) The NY NY NY means he was born in NY, his father was b. in NY, and his mother was b. in NY. His occupation is farmer, on a dairy farm. The OA means Own Account ... ie. he works for himself, and OFF means that he Owns his home, it is Free from a mortgage and that it is a Farm. The "W" at the end of Estella Wager info. means "Waged." For Olive A. Sweet, the "Wd" means widowed, and the "5 3" means she had 5 children, 3 are currently living. Next I started looking backwards, to see if I could find Delos (the father of the one in the 1910 census above). This is what I found: 1880 U.S. CENSUS: Gerry, Chautauqua Co., New York; 4 Jun 1880, Dwelling 40, Family 41: Sweet, Delos W M 38 laborer NY blank blank --Martha W F [41] wf kpng house NY VT VT [Bradway], Alice W F 21 dau at home NY NY NY !1860 U.S. CENSUS: P. O. Vermont, Gerry, Chautauqua Co., New York; Page 78 (stamped), Dwelling 200, Family 190: Deloss Sweet 32 M farm laborer NY --Martha 23 F NY --Elli[n] 1 F NY --Henry 5/12 M NY At first, I thought this was same Delos as on the 1910 census above, but then I also found Delos Sweet in the 1910 index still in Gerry, Chatauqua Co., NY. Now, when I first saw this census record, I assumed that Delos Sweet was the son of the Delos Sweet to whom your ancestor was married. I did find it odd though that she was listed as "Mother" and not "Step-Mother". So I started wondering if perhaps the dates in your message were somehow off. So I started looking for proof of exactly WHEN Olive Damon has been married to Mr. Payne ... as I was wondering if perhaps Olive had been married 1st to Delos Sweet. I found the following census records: 1850 U.S. CENSUS: Eaton, Madison Co., New York; 10 Aug 1850; Page 373 (stamped), Dwelling 686, Family 699: Truman Payne 28 M blacksmith $3000 NY (The $3000 is value of property) Eunise " 63 F N[J] Hester A. " 24 F NY Note: I'm guessing that Eunise is his mother and Hester is his sister. 1860 U.S. CENSUS: P.O. West Eaton, Eaton, Madison Co., NY; 21 July 1860; Page 520 (from index), Page 68 (written): Truman Payne 38 M lumber dealer $2500,$100 NY (The $2500 is property, the $100 is personal property) Olive 23 F NY Charles W. 6 M attended school in year NY Willis 4 M " " " " NY [L]ela F. 1 F NY Eunice 66 F NY I don't think I looked for the 1870 census. 1880 U.S. CENSUS: Eaton, Madison Co., NY (I forgot to copy the other info.) Dwelling 13, Family 14: Payne, Olive C. W F 46 Wd keeping house NY VT NY --Willis A. W M 25 son S boiler maker NY NY NY --May A. W F 10 dau S at school NY NY NY Well, I have to go now and still have more to say, so I'll try to finish this tomorrow or later tonight. Anyway, I finally figured out the the Olive A. in 1910 census record (the very first census record in this e-mail) is NOT your Olive.
