    3. Can anyone tell me more about William (F.) Sweet's family ... parents, siblings, etc? FIRST GENERATION 1. William (F.) SWEET was born in 1854 in Pennsylvania, USA. He was married to Emma UNKNOWN. Emma UNKNOWN was born in 1858 in Virginia, USA. William F. SWEET and Emma UNKNOWN had the following children: 2. Frank SWEET was born in 1872 in Susquehanna City, Pennsylvania 3. Katie SWEET was born in 1876 in Pennsylvania, USA. 4. Emma SWEET was born in 1879 in Pennsylvania, USA. Note: According to the LDS files: *There is a William Sweet in the 1860 census (p. 437 20th Ward 1st Division Philadelphia city census taken on 31st July) with the Joseph Sweet family. Joseph was 44 years old, a tailor, born in Pennsylvania. His wife is Elizabeth, 31 years old born in England. SIblings show as Francis, 15 (male), and Catherine, 9. There is a Thomas Miller living with them who is 27 years old and a plasterer (most likely a relative perhaps of Elizabeth). Thomas and the children were all born in Pennsylvania William is shown as 5 years old. **William and family were in the 1880, Philadelphia, PA census. The 1880 Philadelphia City Directory Reads: Sweet William F., driver, h 1019 Arazona [should read Arizona]. ============================================ Larry D. 2. Cyndi, I am not vary computer illiterate as I could be. But, you appear to know how to find information on line. I have posted family records in the Acestry.com and Genealogy.com program's. I sent an early computer disk on the Sweet-Jaynes Families in Michigan, c1992/93 in the LAS/FHC library in Salt Lake City. Documentation included and repeated in my book "The SWEET-JAYNES and RELATED FAMILIES IN MICHIGAN," 1995, published by Heritage Books Maryland. The documentation was also tested in Barbara Thompson's book on "The DAVID WELLS and MALINDA GOULD FAMILY OF MICHIGAN," 1998. Published by the author through the LDS Library, SLC. Our Sweet Family is included in Barb's book as Peleg L. Sweet married Lucy M. Wells in 1846. If you can locate one of these records you will find all my documents and resources listed. I may be able to e-mail you a copy, if I can remember how to how. I am a retired Reg. Nurse who lost a lot of memory due to a stroke. That is why finding a logical conclusion to my research. Thank you for your time -- Celina

    2. Cyndi Sweet
    3. Celina, I'm glad to try to help. I didn't understand from your initial questions that you had documented the line to a certain point as indicated below. This leads me to one question and one suggestion. Question - your message below seems to indicate that you believe your Sweet line went from Allegany Co., New York to Michigan. I was under the impression (perhaps mistaken) that Paul's Sweets (who you match via the DNA) were in Herkimer and Oswego Counties, New York, before heading to Michigan. What is the evidence tying your line to Allegany County? Suggestion - Why don't you post to the list what you know and what evidence it is based on, and see if we can put our collective heads together to deduce anything? This would require a time line approach, i.e. dates, names, places, and evidence, very clearly laid out. It's worth a try - there are lots of great researchers on this list. 1. RE: Celina's questions regarding Oliver
    2. Greetings! I am writing in response to Celina's most recent inquiries regarding Oliver Sweet. My interest lies in the fact that I am #13407, the match to the DNA sample Celina's family provided. I have attempted on two occasions to write privately to Celina, but for whatever reason I have received no response thus far. As per the pedigree for #13407 posted at John Chandler's site, my research of the various records (census, family, land, vital records) all point to my line of descendency through Oliver Sweet, born August 1746, the son of Benjamin Sweet and his wife Elizabeth. However, in reading through Celina's previous postings in the archives, I have not been able to link her ancestor Peleg L. Sweet to this line. From the various online sources, I have seen record of his marriage in 1846, his listing in the 1860 census, as well as his military record (including a CW pension file). However, that is all I have to go on. Therefore, I am not sure if the match is a coincidence or something more. Celina, if you read this, I would be happy to correspond either on or off the list. Paul Sweet s/o Robert s/o Ira s/o Chester s/o Joseph s/o Benjamin s/o Oliver etc, etc, etc. -- "Cyndi Sweet" <crsweet@cfu.net> wrote: Celina, I think you will find the genealogical process less confusing and more logical if you will approach it not from an abstract (i.e. we are related to Oliver Sweet), but rather on the basis of what you can prove from the present day back. In other words, there are multitudes of individuals with the surname Sweet. Among all those Sweets there are many Pelegs, Olivers, and Timothys. But if you approach the problem by documenting your lineage one step at a time starting in the present day, you will work your way back in a logical manner that rules out the superfluous Olivers, Pelegs and Timothys and focuses on the correct lineage. The DNA testing has given you a wonderful goal - to try to document your line to Oliver Sweet - because you "match" that line. Let the research guide you to him. With regard to the multiple birth states recorded in census records, you will find that is a very common occurrence, as are errors in age, number of years married, numbers of children, etc. As you amass your research, document the source of each piece of information and then weigh the whole. Your job will be to decide, based upon the entirety of the evidence you have found, what are most likely errors and what may be more likely true. It is important as you record your findings that you note every source investigated, even if you feel the information is in error, so future researchers do not feel you "missed" something that should have been considered. I find footnotes to be a good place to discuss other sources of information found and why I discount them as less reliable. Good luck! 3. Bristol County, the towns associated with this family are New Bedford, Fairhaven, & Freetown. And yes, he was 40+ when he married Mercy who was 17 years his junior leaving open the possibility that he had a previous wife and family. In the 1845 Illinois State census he was in the 60-70 age group. All of the children I have found were born after he married Mercy. ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Chandler" <john.chandler@alum.mit.edu> To: <SWEET-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 01, 2005 9:42 PM Subject: Re: Silas Sweet VT, MA & IL > Karen wrote: > > Silas Sweet was born in Bradford, Vermont about 1777, married Mercy > > White in Bristol, Massachusetts January 1, 1820 > > Do you mean the town of Bristol? 3. Silas Sweet was born in Bradford, Vermont about 1777, married Mercy White in Bristol, Massachusetts January 1, 1820, lived in Bradford, Vermont until about 1830 when they returned to Massachusetts. The family moved to Illinois about 1840. Silas owned land in Greene County, Illinois, and appeared in the 1845 State Census in Madison County, Illinois. Mercy and some of the children are in the 1850 Madison County census but no Silas. Mercy disappeared and presumably died between 1850 and 1860. Believe their children are Emeline, Mary, Lafayette, Eliza, Maria, Lydia Ann, Benjamin and Andrew who are all in Illinois at some point but did not all come with their parents. Some of their families ended up in California. I would like to find date and place of death and hopefully even probate information for Silas and Mercy.
